My Review

As soon as I turned the cover of this book the author had me walking in Louisa Bell’s shoes, and loving this girl. A big heart filled with compassion, and when she becomes homeless decides to go to her brother who is in the brig in Fort Reno.
Be ready for a few chuckles and wonder how she does what she does, but with such a loving way, that faux pas are soon forgotten, but we do see what a great mind she does possess with her chess playing. Can a bar room singer get away with posing as a governess, well your about to see it happen, well kind of, until the mother-in-law goes falling down.
Come and see how our lovely Lola Bell perceivers and we get some historical information along the way, and meet Major Daniel, the father of the girls and head of the fort.
When the book ended I was ready for more, I wanted to stay here with these delightful folks.

My Review

What an interesting concept the author used putting up a bill board to advertise for a wife, made me think this guy must have a lot of money. Then the response to the advertisement, kind of shocking and sad in some ways, but life has a way of intercepting all of this, and thus the story we embark on.

This is not the usual boy meets girl story and then happy ending, but it does have a lot of twists and turns and then Alaska enters the fold, and not just a city in the big state, but a blip on the map. A real shock for someone who has lived in a town or even the city, talk about rural!

We have quite the tale woven here, and some sour grapes, in the form of a former Finance’, now married, did not see all that happens coming, and makes for a great read.

A Courtship on Huckleberry Hill (The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill #8) by Jennifer Beckstrand

There's nothing Huckleberry Hill, Wisconsin’s irrepressible eighty-somethings Anna and Felty Helmuth like better than a challenge. And the chance to matchmake their feisty granddaughter is their most delightful task yet…

Elsie Helmuth’s plain-spoken ways got her in trouble once before, so she needs to make a good impression at her new teaching job in Huckleberry Hill. But she's not about to let disabled student Wally Sensenig work below his potential. And she definitely won’t put up with his hot-headed older brother sabotaging her efforts, no matter how handsome he is. . .

Sam is nearly at the end of his rope caring for his ailing, widowed mother, working their farm, and raising his siblings. He'll admit Elsie’s ideas are bringing Wally out of his angry shell—but why does she have to be as stubborn as she is pretty? Yet as it turns out, Elsie has taught Sam something about himself as well. And he’ll do whatever it takes to make up for his mistakes—and win her heart forever.

My Review

really loved being back with the best Amish grandparents Annie and Felty, and they sure didn’t disappoint, I just hate waiting for stories about more of their grandchildren

The author presents a strong caring young woman for the new teacher in this Wisconsin Amish settlement, and of course she is the Helmuth’s granddaughter and we see for ourselves what a great teacher she is. The man that Annie has picked out for our Elsie at times leaves a lot to be desired, but he has a lot on his plate.

The story does involve a brother of Sam’s who has a number of handicaps, notably missing a leg. While Sam is felling guilt, and pampers and babies him, Elsie seems to have compassion and intuition to know exactly what to say and do.

Come and see what a bit of jealously will do to hurt so many, and undo a lot of accomplishments. A different type of Amish story, and one that will linger with you.

I'm a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.

I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I've retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I'm from Texas. (?) Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son--a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!

I love homemade tacos, nail polish, and romance novels--not necessarily in that order. I'm a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I'm shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.

I believe that God is love. I guess that's why I adore romances.

I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I'm a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture. I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that's me June Cleaver with a laptop.

My Review

A delightful and rather different Amish read, and oh so enjoyable and quickly became a page turner, and I didn’t want to put it down.
With a sad happening, a murder, and a handicapped son left without his mother, and soon ending up in the slammer, his words not mine. We begin an adventure, with Kappy King, a young woman the local Amish community thinks of as being different and mainly unseen. She soon teams up with the unseen or shunned daughter of the murdered woman Edie, and we are off on a task of finding the real murderer and freeing Jimmy.
Add to all of this a lot of adorable beagles, and you will soon feel your heart melted, as did Kappy, but who is out to destroy the family and their business? My guesses would change and then change again, and the eye witnesses were a lot like a group playing the old game of telephone. So, as you quickly turn the pages you will be guessing and changing your mind, at least I did, and you really may be surprised by who is causing all the chaos and worst of all a murderer.
I really enjoyed this read, and now I am looking forward to the next edition, coming soon!

My Review

Three entirely different novella’s that can be quickly read, they deal with a bit of romance, but once you start you won’t put it down until you finish, at least that story.

The first reminds us that we sometimes think that grass is greener on the other side, we don’t even see what is before our eyes. It is a way different mail order bride story, and surprises abound for those involved.

The second tells of a time in our history, our loved one goes off to war, and that maybe the last time we ever see one another. Loved the letters and we get to hear the reaction to what is being said.

The final read is again at war time, but this time we are in England and the Doctor is an American. We are in the late stages of WWII, the same as the above, only oceans apart. We find gentleman with a bit of a chip on his shoulder, but read on we get to know what makes him tick.

Refreshing a fun, and love that I can quickly get to the end, but then I want more, and move on to the next. The one thing in common here is Christmas, all in different places.

She has always lived on the east coast, but now resides in Nevada with her husband and two chubby cats.

My Review
I really enjoyed this different Amish read, and really makes you think about the legalities of buying property.

Can you imagine thinking you are a day away from owning a property, and because you are not from the area the owner is allowing you to go in early, you do and there is someone else there making themselves to home. Now what?

The author has us really wondering when an attraction happens between the two, one Amish and one Mennonite, one with children and one without, one driving a horse and one a car, can it be?

Love all the compassion shown here for the less fortunate, and the time and help to try and make things better.

This is a story that will linger with you long after the final page has been turned, I would love to go and spend some time with these big-hearted people.

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Harlequin and was not required to give a positive review.

12 Days of Clean Romance – Day 12 – December 16th – Cami Checketts

How to Kiss a Billionaire by Cami Checketts
Sassy meets swoon-worthy in this fast-paced contemporary romance.
Miriam Salisbury escapes to Oregon to avoid a boyfriend who won’t take no for an answer, killing her beloved cat to prove it. When her father sends Clay Browning to protect her, she’s certain he’s lost his mind. As far as she’s concerned Clay’s experience is limited to posing for the camera, charming women, and making fun of her. He’s been teasing her since they were children and she’s never gotten over the way he threw crawdads at her at church picnics.
Clay retired from the military and entered the world of private security. When he gets the call to protect Miriam he’s excited to be around his lifelong crush. As expected, he teases her nonstop and the only thing he takes seriously is her security. He knows she’d never give him a chance and he can’t help but give her a hard time.
After Miriam is dumped in the freezing ocean on a crabbing expedition and Clay saves her from drowning and freezing to death, she takes a second look at her hired gun. But opening up to him is more terrifying than facing her stalker.
As events escalate to a frenzied climax, Miriam and Clay must put aside past grudges in the hope of finding a lasting love for their future.

“I LOVE these sweet romances! I love that each of them is a mini escape. You almost feel as though you’ve traveled to a warm destination even though it’s cold and snowy where you live. I love that I can pass them to either my daughter or my grandma and never have any concern about the content. And the characters in these are amazing! I love them all!” Cathy Jeppsen, Book Reviewer, My Book a Day

Miriam closed her eyes as Clay’s arms came around her and held her tight.
“Whoa, darling, if I would’ve known I’d get this reception, I would’ve broken into your house years ago.”
Miriam pushed away from him, stumbling from the realization that he hadn’t changed. Clay was a vicious flirt and never took anything seriously. She shoved at his chest, but he didn’t budge. He was real and he was here, and unfortunately for her unsteady nerves, it didn’t look like he was going away. “What are you doing here?” she demanded.
“Your daddy hired me.”
“My daddy … hired you?” She glared at him. “For what? A pinup model?”
He smiled and tilted his head to the side. “I know I look good, but I actually have a few skills in protection too.”
“You do not. All you’ve ever been good at is spending your billions of dollars and getting women to simper at your feet.” She knew he’d been in the military for four years after high school, but after that, he appeared to be the ultimate player. At least, it looked that way in the online photos she’d seen, when she’d googled him. Okay, it was pathetic that she’d googled him, but he was Clay Browning, a.k.a. Miriam’s dream man.
He spread his arms, and she couldn’t help but notice the definition from his forearms and biceps up through his shoulders and chest. Maybe he should find a shirt that wasn’t so … form-fitting. “Hey, I’ve got lots of talents. What can I say?”
Miriam pushed out a huffy breath. “You are not here. This is all some kind of crazy fantasy.”
“I know I’m the stuff fantasies are made of, but I really am here.” He sauntered a step closer, and that spicy cologne made her stomach heat up. “You want to enact some of those fantasies you’ve been having about me?”
She put a hand on his chest to keep him from coming any closer. Those muscles were real. Yikes. She dropped her hand and stepped back. “For one second, just for one, be serious. Why are you here, and how did you get in my house?”
Clay rolled his eyes and folded his arms across his chest. Sheesh. What did he do with biceps that defined? Wrestle bulls?
Focus, Miriam!
“Your daddy called me, said Greg was threatening and stalking you and I had to find you. So I found you, and now I’m here to watch over you.”
Watch over you? She would not survive with this man in the same town, let alone the same house. Her throat was dry and all those daydreams she used to have about him rotated through her mind.
“How did you get in?” she demanded.
“I told you: I have skills.” He smiled and finally admitted, “I was special ops in the Army and I’ve worked in private security since then.”
“You’re being serious now? This isn’t some bull crap line that Clay Browning is giving me?”
He smirked. “You can believe whatever you want, sweetheart.” He took a step closer, and her legs betrayed her by not backing up. “But do believe that I’m here and you I and are going to get real cozy.”
Miriam looked over his gorgeous face. She clenched her trembling hands together and swallowed hard. “I’m not one of your flavors of the week, Clay.”
He leaned in and sniffed her. “Ah. Yeah, I think you are. Vanilla with a hint of chocolate. My favorite flavor this week.”
