More from Larry

The book’s title is word play on Blue Bayou, written and recorded by Roy Orbison and memorably covered by Linda Ronstadt. The song is integral to the storyline, and “Blue” in the title is a blue-eyed Australian shepherd dog pictured on the cover who appears throughout the book.

The cold of Colorado and the companionship of a faithful Australian Shepherd named Blue keep Daniel comfortable in his deluxe bucolic cabin after the death of his young wife. The countryside gives solace after his busy years as a successful big city attorney; however, that idyllic life is interrupted by a young lady, Paula, who is looking for the one diner in this one-horse town. Not only does Paula happen on to the cabin and its owner, but within a few snow-bound days, along with some additional ones she could “justify” to her conscience, this paradise enables a joy of life that Paula has never experienced with her ministerial husband. Yet, fate has its ways, and walking away from one’s own past is never all that easy.

Gildersleeve brilliantly leads his reader through this love story, which, the reader will learn is much more than just a love story. The author deftly weaves a story of love, loss, acceptance, honor, and happiness. The story entwines philosophy, biblical teachings, a sense of responsibility, and plain ever-day stoicism. The story unfolds in a coherence that the reader can readily appreciate, even though the events of the lives of the main characters are sometimes complex and initially appear unrelated. One of the major accomplishments of the author and a joy for the reader is that the events are cleverly brought to a close that is not the usual predicted one found in novels of lesser sophistication.

This is indeed a best seller that will find its readers underlining whole paragraphs because they bring thought and inspiration that give reasons for inner dialogue and for conversation with friends. This is a perfect selection for any book club whose members enjoy digging deep into themes and who appreciate detailed analysis of characters and perhaps relating the story to personal episodes.
