Always a Last Chance -smWhat if the dream you’ve always followed turns out to be the wrong one, after all?

Doctor Jessica MacLeod and Coach Andy Ryan have one thing in common: Both are living the dream. Dr. Jess’s practice is so full now that she meets herself coming and going, and it looks like Coach Ryan is finally taking his Last Chance Pumas all the way to the state championship. Life is good—or would be if somewhere along the way, they hadn’t lost sight of each other.

It’s nobody’s fault, really. Life just got in the way. But when teen-aged newlyweds, weeks away from becoming parents, land in Last Chance with no place to go, the town takes them in. They can stay with Andy. He has lots of room in the house he’s refurbishing. And of course, Jess will want to look after that poor young mother, won’t she? She takes care of everyone. As the good folks of Last Chance again step in to manage everyone’s lives, Andy and Jess find themselves unwillingly thrown together caring for the young couple. Will life get even more complicated, or will it finally start to make sense?

More from Cathleen

The American Southwest can feel empty as you drive through it, but I’ve never found it to be lonely. The sky is always, so it seems, a brilliant turquoise. Faint mountains of purple and blue guard the distant horizons, and craggy outcroppings of rock rise from the desert floor nearby. Saguaro cactus and Joshua tree, with arms raised in greeting or alarm, give way to sage and mesquite as the highway rises out of the low desert and heads into the higher altitudes of New Mexico. I have lived my life not far from this desert, and something about it always calls me home.

Once, while driving down I-10 through Arizona, I noticed a town about ten miles west of the highway, shimmering in the heat that rose from the desert. At a glance, I could see its northern and southern boundaries and its entire eastern edge. The town was behind me in only a minute, but I couldn’t stop wondering about it. What town was that? How did it get out there all by itself?  Who lived there? What did they do, and why did they stay? Thus, was born Last Chance, New Mexico, the small fictional ranching and chile growing community I write about.

Always a Last Chance is the fifth in the series A Place to Call Home. In each book, someone is looking for their place, looking for home. Most have messed up pretty badly somewhere else, and have given up on themselves, but Last Chance is a place of second chances and redemption. Dr. Jess Macleod seems to be the exception. She’s always known exactly what she wanted and gone after it. No detours for her. She’s known since she was a little girl that she wanted to be a small-town doctor somewhere in the southwest, and here she is with an exploding practice in Last Chance. So, what’s missing? And why does spending every waking moment doing what she knows she was born to do leave such emptiness?  Perhaps each of us, no matter where we start, sometimes finds ourselves in need of another chance. And Last Chance is a good place to begin the search.
