Use your ‘logic,’ as the sages of Man would say. Did I not curse you to your face when you defied the way things are in your unfenced Sian Ka’an where you roamed wild and free? Did I not pronounce your doom when you refused the law of hospitality between my kind and yours? Behold what has befallen. You have lost the path. You are trapped in a place you did not want to go. ‘Lord of the Valley’ you call yourself? See, now you are lord of the Pit. That is who you are.”
“Say no more,” Oracle growled.
The spider monkeys whooped in nervous response—and in glee at seeing a new drama more important than all their domestic squabbles put together.
“Lord of the Pit,” they twittered. “Lord of the Pit. That’s who he is. Lord of the Pit! Lord of the Pit!” And they forgot their fear as they scorned the cat below.
