Miriam was glad to be
warm and cozy. There were so many people in the town but it was nice and
peaceful inside her cowshed. Little did she know that she would soon be
joined by Midnight Visitors . . . and not just any old visitors!
Snuggle
up and enjoy the warm, soft feel the art and narrative bring to this
delightful Christmas picture book with a difference.

My Review
The Midnight Visitors is a beautifully illustrated hard covered book
perfect for little hands. They will be drawn to the book by looking at
its cover, and pointing to all of the visitors at the manger. Miriam
is the cow in this story and this is her manger, and she doesn’t seem to
be getting much sleep this evening, everyone needs a place out of the
cold. Thus her home becomes the setting for our Savior’s birth. A perfect book for this time of the year, and a treasure to keep from year to year, get ready to share with your little ones. I received this book through Kregel Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.

Excerpt
My first encounter with a southern guy isn't going so well. So far I've admitted I have never tried sweet tea, and my big toe is a little too long for the shoes I am wearing. Nice one, Poppy. Now he is going to think I am a weird westerner with a foot fetish. I try hard not to look down at my black, high-heeled boots. Why am I the only one on campus wearing any black?
"My name is Cole," the man says with a grin on his face. I reach out to shake his hand. My palms are sweating just like every other place on my body. I haven't even turned thirty yet, and I'm already having hot flashes. It is going to take me some time to get used to this heat.
"Poppy Peters," I reply. I wipe my forehead and underneath my eyes. I bite my lip when I see a bit of smeared mascara on the side of my finger. It is so humid my makeup is melting off. "Is it always this hot here?"
"Welcome to Georgia." Cole chuckles and shrugs as we walk towards the student bakery. Cole is one of the first students I bumped into at the registration office. His lemon-colored T-shirt shines bright compared to his dark skin, and his impressive physique makes me look at him twice. His eyes are intriguing—an even mix of blue and green.
As we walk, I can't help but admire how lush the vegetation is on campus. Every tree outstretches towards the sidewalks, providing a much needed break from the glaring sun. The patches of grass remind me of ocean waves, if the ocean sparkled like emeralds. Even the flowerbeds near the Administration building had bundles of purple and orange wildflowers that couldn't be contained.
"What's that smell?" I ask. "And don't say it smells like fresh meat. I heard a teacher in the Registrar's Office use that joke about a hundred times."
"I'll show you."
I follow Cole across campus until the heavenly smell of baked bread and sugary doughnuts grows stronger. I long for that smell sometimes. It takes me back to my schoolgirl days when I spent my weekends in the kitchen with Grandma Liz. My Grandma Liz came to CallePastryAcademy when she was in her early twenties. I imagine her tiny frame and long, dancer legs. It's a miracle that she came to this school and still stayed so thin.

Katie Fisher and Brady
James may be a match made in heaven, but that doesn't seem to guarantee
them a happily ever after accompanied by angelic choirs. In fact, the
sounds being heard at the bridal shop where she works are on the
contentious side lately, as a bride- and groom-to-be try to mediate the
growing rivalry between their basketball-obsessed families in the middle
of play-off season. On top of that, Katie's parents are nagging her to
get out of Dallas and come home to tiny Fairfield where her former
boyfriend Carson is waiting for her, ready to rekindle their
relationship. Oy vey! What's a girl to do? And will she ever be able to
wear that gorgeous wedding dress she won?
The breezy fun
continues as Janice Thompson throws everyone's favorite small-town girl
into big-city bridal chaos--and makes her choose between the love she
thought she lost and the love she stumbled upon in the aftermath.
Janice Thompson is a seasoned romance author and screenwriter.
An expert at pulling the humor from the situations we get ourselves
into, Thompson offers an inside look at the wedding business, drawing on
her own experiences as a wedding planner. She is the author of the
hugely popular Weddings by Bella series and the Backstage Pass series,
as well as Picture Perfect, The Icing on the Cake, and The Dream Dress. She lives in Texas.
Janice Thompson has once again brought us back to Katie Fisher and her
life in Dallas. She was the winner of the bridal contest and the
beautiful gown she is now hanging in her grandmother’s closet. Katie
has found new love with Brady, but he has his own demons to fight
dealing with his knee and his basketball career with Mavericks. It seems
everywhere he goes he is recognized, and people either like him or
judge him for his team. Grandmother Queenie is planning her wedding
to the Reverend, and we are about getting ready for this celebration.
There are other family romances going on, some having problems. Come
back or start here and enjoy this loving family, with the usual ups and
downs, and enjoy a few chuckles and fuzzing warm feelings. See how when
they follow God’s will instead of their own how things work out. When
you turn the final page you will be wanting more, and there is another
book to come! I cannot wait! I received this book through Revell Reads Blogger Program, and was not required to give a positive review.

An award-winning novelist’s heartwarming story about family and love lost, found, and finally truly revealed at Christmas.
Christmas
takes a very different turn when the guests of honor break up instead
of announcing their engagement. Trapped with his family, they learn that
love looks different than either imagined. Both in their eighties,
Dodie and Wilson Binder celebrateevery Christmas as if it were their
last. This year, their grandson Micah is planning to ask his girlfriend,
Katie, to marry him so they can celebrate with the whole family. But
things go very wrong when she says "no." Now they are stuck. Too many
people, too much snow, and too little room should be a recipe for
disaster. But sometimes too much is just enough. Especially when it's
Christmas. Amazon
About The Author
Drawing from 33 years of on-air radio ministry, Cynthia Ruchti tells
stories of hope-that-glows-in-the-dark through her novels and novellas,
nonfiction books and devotionals, and speaking for women’s and writers’
events. Her books have been recognized by Romantic Times Reviewers’
Choice Awards, Selah Awards, the Gayle Wilson Award of Excellence,
Christian Retailing’s BEST Awards, and Carol Award nominations, among
other honors, including a Family Fiction Readers’ Choice Award. She and
her plot-tweaking husband live in Pittsville, Wisconsin, not far from
their three children and five grandchildren.
A family that has it right, a family that knows the true meaning of
Christmas, and this story shows in more way than one that the Binder
family knows why we celebrate. Micah has brought the woman, Kate,
that he believes will be his soul mate, and can’t wait and doesn’t to
pop the question. Kate over whelmed and carrying her own baggage says
“No”. Micah is about to get a little help from all of his family,
and Kate is about to be overwhelmed, but before we are finished you will
wish that you were a member of this family. Everyone including the
children seem to know that Jesus is their savior and the reason we have
Christmas. This is a wonderful warmhearted read, and as you turn the
pages and think it can’t get any better, it does. I highly recommend
this wonderful Christmas read it will bring you joy, even with a second
read. I received this book through Litfuse Publicity Book Tours and was not required to give a positive review.
Young-at-heart
octogenarians Anna and Felty Helmuth never miss the chance to find a
perfect match for one of their grandchildren. And when their beloved
Cassie returns to Huckleberry Hill, Wisconsin, Anna has a feeling they
might soon have a doctor in the family…Though Cassie Coblenz left
her Amish community to go to college, Mammi and Dawdi’s farm will always
feel like home. It’s the ideal place for an extended study break—at
least until her grandmother’s handsome Englisch doctor becomes a regular
distraction. Zach Reynolds is the kind of heartbreaker Cassie has
learned to avoid, no matter how charming he may be. Unlike
every woman Zach has met in recent years, Cassie doesn’t fall at his
feet. Strong, generous, beautiful within and without —she’s everything
he could want. Yet the gulf between them deepens when a tragedy shakes
his faith. Now the good doctor has one goal—to become a man who could be
worthy of Cassie’s love…
Jennifer Beckstrandgrew up with a steady diet of William Shakespeare and Jane Austen.
After all that literary immersion, I naturally decided to get a degree in
mathematics, which came in handy when one of my six children needed help with
homework. After my fourth daughter was born, I started writing. By juggling
diaper changes, soccer games, music lessons, laundry, and two more children, I
finished my first manuscript—a Western—in just under fourteen years.
I have always been fascinated by the Amish way of life and now write
Inspirational Amish Romance. I am drawn to the strong faith of the Plain people
and admire the importance they put on enduring family ties. I have visited and
studied Amish communities in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin where I met with a
bishop and a minister as well as several Amish mamms, dats, and children. It
has always impressed me at what salt-of-the-earth people they are. My
interactions with these kind people have been some of the most rewarding
experiences of my life. I have a dear Amish friend with whom I correspond in
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She helps me keep my facts straight and gives
me inspiration for my stories.
My goal is to write uplifting, inspiring stories with happy endings and
hopeful messages. If my books make readers want to give themselves a big hug or
jump up and down for joy, I’ve done my job. I am a member of Romance Writers of
America and American Christian Fiction Writers and am represented by Mary Sue
Seymour of The Seymour Agency.
There are three Amish romances in the Forever After in Apple Lake
Series (Summerside/Guideposts). Kate’s Song, Rebecca’s Rose, and Miriam’s Quilt
are all now available.
I have six Amish Roamish buggymances in the works with Kensington
Books. The first and second books, Huckleberry Hill and Huckleberry Summer, are
now available in stores and online. The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill is set
in northern Wisconsin Amish country.
The series, The Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill, is about an elderly
Amish couple who try to find suitable mates for their grandchildren. What could
be more fun than throwing two young people together to see if sparks ignite? No
one would ever suspect two octogenarian Amish folks of mischief.
Romantic Times gave Huckleberry Hill 4 1/2 stars and chose Huckleberry
Summer as a TOP PICK.
I have four daughters, two sons, three sons-in-law,
and two adorable grandsons. I live in the foothills of the Wasatch Front with
my husband and one son still left at home.
I knew when I received this book what it was about, at least the topic, I
put it aside to savor and read when I really wanted to enjoy a book. I
knew! This story did not disappoint and I could not wait for Annie
and Felty’s banter, and Annie and her match making. This one is a
surprise as this granddaughter, Cassie, is no longer Amish, but she is
still a much-loved member of the Helmuth family. Now who wouldn’t want
these two for their Grandparents, I sure would, and as they involved
themselves in their family’s lives you see a lot of love. Annie has
picked out the young intern that has diagnosed her foot cancer, and she
decides that Zach Reynolds would be the perfect match for Cassie. She
didn’t realize that Cassie had already met him, but that is another or
part of this amazing story. Watch this young doctor learn to understand the Amish and end up milking a cow, and learn how to tap trees to make maple syrup. Now
Cassie is up against her family, namely her mother and brother, who
believers she will go to hell if she doesn’t give up her worldly life
and join the Amish church. Wait until you see what happens with the
“pink” dress, definitely not what they planned! I hate that we are
going to have to wait awhile for another visit with this cherished
family! There is a new series coming and I am looking forward to it! I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Kensington, and was not required to give a positive review.
Excerpt:
Her face was the only thing that had kept him sane during his deployment. At this moment, however, thoughts of Morgan had been pushed to the side for reasons of pure survival. Declan wiped the mud from his eye with a swift movement of his hand, just quick enough so that he could see again. Booming thunder went off near and far.
Swearing under his breath, Declan closed one eye and squinted the other shut as he spied his target. Breathe. One, two, three… he could do this. The first time he’d had to shoot another man he had faltered, hesitated only the briefest of seconds, during which time the man escaped his line of sight and shot a fellow soldier in the leg, causing serious injury.
This time, Declan concentrated, aimed his M4 rifle, and fired. The distinct thud of a man dropping to the ground confirmed the target had been hit. Swiping at the sweat in his eyes from the sweltering mid-day heat, Declan gulped and struggled to his knees. Lining up his rifle again, his neck and shoulders ached with fatigue. He bit down and gritted his teeth, tasting dirt while fighting off the pain.
It seemed as if hours had gone by, when in fact, it had probably only been minutes when finally the haunting sound of gunfire ceased. Not one to trust silence in any setting, Declan mentally counted upward until he reached near fifty.
“All clear,” his buddy, Sean, called out. “All clear.”
Declan, always cautious, still maintained his position until he heard his fellow soldiers from his platoon begin to speak. Peeking up from his ravine, Declan rose slowly to his feet as the rifle was pressed to his side.
Surveying the damage, it appeared that several of their enemies were lying still on the ground. The man he had shot lay still, appearing lifeless. Another man lay several feet away. It seemed the enemies had taken off, deserting the boundaries of the mountainous terrain of Afghanistan. His platoon mates fell silent, all business as they quickly gathered their belongings to head back to base.
Declan clutched his rifle, drawing closer to his victim. Curiosity had gotten the best of him. Fully aware of his previous actions, Declan stepped even closer. He had never killed a man before — injured, yes, but never killed. This man did not appear to be alive.
His heart sped up as sweat caused his fatigues to cling to his body. For God’s sake, the man looked to have been only in his early twenties at best. What have I done? What are we doing here? Waves of nausea rose and Declan swallowed hard.
“Hey! Step back!” Sean called out. “Move out! I repeat, move out!”
Hearing his friend call out to him, Declan turned toward the sound of his voice, realizing his mistake seconds too late. He should have known better; he should have. But no amount of training can prepare you for taking another man’s life.
Glancing swiftly at Sean through tear-stained eyes, he saw the movement in his peripheral vision. Sean raced to the open dirt road. They were sitting ducks, in plain sight. The man that Declan had presumed dead, the one he had shot, raised his own rifle and fired at Sean, who dropped instantly to ground.
“No! No!” Declan spun his head back to the imminent threat, a moment too late. The force of the explosion knocked him to the ground in an instant. Morgan’s face was the last thing that registered in his mind as another shot fired, leaving his world black.
****
Clouds scattered overhead, cries of gulls bringing back another time, a different memory, sitting here with Declan by her side. Morgan squeezed her jaw, fighting back the pain.
Months later, there was still no word from Declan. On the Internet, she had searched out his name relentlessly but there was no mention of Declan, no death certificates and his name couldn’t be found on any list of casualties of the war. It was as if he had simply disappeared, but that wasn’t possible and she feared the worst. He was gone and there was no closure for Morgan, as his only living relatives were his mom and some family living on the west coast, whom Declan hadn’t seen in years. Even she and Declan’s old friend, Stephen seemed to be losing touch.
She could sit on this beach and watch the water forever; it was a place Declan had cherished, a place she felt close to him. Never again would her life be the same without Declan Blake. How was she going to make it without him?
The world was quiet and without joy for Morgan. Even Morgan’s mother nagged her to speak with a therapist. She didn’t see the purpose of smiling or laughing when it was all forced. Constant thoughts of Declan plagued her day and night.
Morgan nearly jumped when her cell rang. First instincts were to let the call go to voicemail, but she knew the person calling would only persist. That’s how it had been lately; she would ignore phone calls only to find tons of messages waiting.
It was Elle, calling for the second time that day. “Hi, Elle.”
“Where have you been? I’ve been trying to call you for hours,” Elle exclaimed.
“I don’t know, I’m just hanging out.”
“Down by the river again?” Elle inquired.
“Yup,” Morgan responded as she moved her foot around in the sand.
“Figured as much.”
Elle’s voice sounded odd, almost as if she were hearing her close by. Morgan turned to see her friend walking toward her on the grassy path leading to the small beach.
Rising to her feet, Morgan felt tears escape. Elle was by her side, arms wrapped around her within moments. Morgan released Elle and took a small step back.
“Oh, Elle, what am I going to do?” she sobbed.
“You’re going to live, dammit. Declan would want you to be happy.”
“How? How can I forget about him, just move on?” It wasn’t possible, she had tried, and it just wasn’t working. Even when she was at work, she was just going through the motions; she did her job, but her heart wasn’t the same.
“I think it’s time for you to see someone to talk about all of this. You’ve waited long enough.”
She was right and so was her mother, believe it or not. “I will, Elle. I will because I don’t know what else to do.”
“Morgan, you’re the strongest person I know. You have so much happiness and love to share. I have full confidence in you. You’re going to make it and come out stronger in the end.” Elle spoke through her own tears.
“Thanks, Elle. I love you.” Morgan felt better knowing there was someone on her side rooting for her.

her father wears his Colt .45s, with a warning: no dating allowed.

boy Paul Peterson. When the relationship–and Jessica’s pregnancy–are
discovered, Paul will be dead by nightfall.
Seventeen years
later Jessica and her daughter live a quiet life with horse farmer, Matt

uncovers her father’s secrets and discovers that her true path in life, and love, are just a choice away.

About The Author
Lisa Maggiore is the author of a children’s picture book, Ava the Monster Slayer: A Warrior Who Wears Glasses and a fiction short story, Pinterest Saved My Marriage.
Lisa is currently working on other writing projects and practicing her
storytelling skills during Live Lit performances. Lisa resides in
Chicago with her husband and four children. Lisa loves to travel, watch
da Bears during the NFL season and be silly with her family.
I have secrets
that need to be forgiven, Jessica thought, staring into the darkness of
her bedroom. She sat with her knees tucked under her chin, tented in
bedding that was slowly letting out the warmth. The yellow glow from her
bedside clock read 3:06 a.m.
Jessica glanced at Matt and noticed that he never flinched when her
alarm went off. They had been sharing the same bed for many years, but
sometimes she hardly knew he was there.
Wrapping her
arms around herself she shuffled toward the bathroom at the end of the
hall, flipping on the night-light next to the sink so she could take a
hot shower in relative darkness. Cranking open a small window she drew a
deep breath allowing the smell of fresh dew, hay, and pine to swirl
inside her nose.
A faint light
shone from the bulb above the stove as she ate oatmeal in the kitchen.
Various songs from her past kept flooding into her consciousness and
Jessica tried to distract herself by focusing on the mundane thoughts of
the morning, but that only made the songs louder. And behind the songs
were voices that did not want to stay buried under her secret armor any
longer.
Jessica had
been able to keep her feelings about the death of her first love, Paul,
buried deep. And down deeper were the memories of her father holding
those damn Colt .45s that served as judge and jury for young lovers
sneaking around. Jessica believed the ache in her chest would go away
with time; however, it had been seventeen years.
But last night, while channel surfing, she stumbled upon the classic eighties movie, Purple Rain, starring Prince. She could not stop herself from watching despite the movie ending at midnight.
Caught in a whirlwind of euphoric recall; remembering the excitement of
sneaking out with her best friend, Marilee, and going to see the movie.
How the sex scene jump-started her adolescent hormones. She spent
countless hours daydreaming of Paul singing, “The Beautiful Ones” to her
as an ode to loving her so desperately and not wanting to lose her to
another. The intensity at the end of the song made her feel alive.
The songs in
the movie evoked feelings in her that were a mixed bag of good and
guilt. Usually those memories were ones she could bury, not wanting love
and death to overpower her again. But not this time. She allowed
herself to remember some of them, resurrecting other memories she could
never forget.
My Review
Can you imagine growing up so protected that you never go anywhere
without mace, or your Dad showing you his Colt 45? Jessica and her
brother have always lived like this, and then she is finally set free,
or rather allowed to attend the local high school. She has to be home
within ten minutes of school letting out, but she finds ways to have
private time with her new boyfriend, Paul. Her father shows her the gun
and tells her if anything ever happens, or one of those boys comes
around he will say he was breaking into their home and kill them. When
Jess become pregnant, she knows and it is confirmed that her Dad has
made his threat the truth. What a mixed up world this poor girl lives,
and there are deep secrets here, that go back to her Dad and his
sister’s growing up. Will this family ever be free of all the ghosts
that seem to haunt them? Will Jessie ever be able to find real
happiness, or will she continue to grieve for what might have been. This
is a story of a family that has so many hurts and so much pain, coming
at them from all sides. It becomes a page tuner because you want to know
what is or did happen. I received this book from Pump Up Your Book Virtual Book Tours, and was not required to give a positive review.
