The Imperfect Tie Between Characters, Themes, and Titles
I love reading across all genres. If it’s well- written, I’m an easy catch. What I don’t like is when fictional characters are portrayed as model-worthy with perfect looks, perfect physiques, and perfect personalities. Yuk! I’ve never met a perfect person.
To quote Mark Twain, “The only difference between reality and fiction is that fiction needs to be credible.”
I want characters with the same flaws as you and me—judgmental, short-tempered, guilt-ridden, egotistical, defiant, withdrawn, too-skinny, compassionate, couch potatoes, foolish, silly, serious, low self-esteem, arrogant, hurt, guilty, deceiving, generous… in other words, real people. These are character traits I relate to, and they come alive on the pages, giving hope that we can also learn from our mistakes and grow into something better.
The characters in the Imperfect Series let themselves and others down. They struggle with life issues, make poor decisions, grieve over mistakes, and then pick themselves up and go on.
In Imperfect Wings, guilt and low self esteem plague TJ, while her male counterpart, Garrett, struggles with anger issues. In Imperfect Trust, yeah, trust was a problem for both Lucy and Wade. With Imperfect Bonds, Cassidy fights for her sister’s forgiveness as she deals with feelings of inadequacy … both of which carry over into her relationship with Derek. In the final book of the series, Imperfect Promises, the main male character, Jonas, is by a nature a control freak. Shea, the female protagonist, rose from the ashes of a devastating childhood to forge a new life for herself. Both discover that promises made to themselves and to others can’t always be kept. Despite best intentions, life sometimes gets in the way.

My Review

Ok, I read this book and was riveted and when I finished I realized that it is the last of 5 in a series, so yes this can be read alone. Now I need to read the other four.
What a journey you are about to begin as you turn the first page of this story, and not for the faint of heart as there is almost non-stop action, and just when it seems that calm has finally settled, um, nope!
There is just enough of subtle romance to keep you wondering, and the road blocks are almost unsurmountable, but boy will you be page turning to find out how everything turns out and of course, who will survive.
A don’t miss suspense mystery!

My Review

This is the second book in this series, and can be read alone, but we pick up at a wedding, and go forward from there with a chance meeting and then a sad professional meeting a few days later.
This is a read that I felt I could be hearing on the news, it hits all too close to reality, and unfortunately it could all be true.
While my mind did lock onto who the main culprit was you will have to read to see if you catch on too. With a lot of action here you will not be able to guess what is around the next corner.
We are reunited with the life friends of the Tree House Gang, and I love the relationship they share, and how they are there for one another.
With a bit of sweet romance, and a strong faith in God, you will be wanting to come back soon for another linger into the lives of these characters.

My Review

I enjoyed this read that actually spans centuries, and is centered around a family heirloom.
Each author tells their own story and pulls us in with how they obtained this stunning piece, and true love is associated with the owner. Each mother in turn passes this broach on to their daughter.
These novellas also include the Christmas season, something for everyone, each a quick sweet read that compelled me to move to the next, and moving from the early 1800’s to modern day, all with the love of God and following Him.

I’m often asked if I’ve always wanted to be a writer. The short answer is, “No.” I was never the type of kid who always had her nose in a book or who wrote stories in her journal every night by lamplight. I was too busy living in my imagination all day like the little boy with the stuffed tiger in the cartoon “Calvin and Hobbes.” I would imagine wild, dramatic stories wherever I went.
After attending Hope College in Holland, Michigan for three years, I married my husband Ken, and completed my degree in psychology at Southern Connecticut State University. Then we set off on a real-life adventure, living in Bogota, Colombia for two years where I taught 4th grade in a Colombian school and Ken performed in the symphony orchestra. With no TV and plenty of time to read, I became an avid reader for the first time in my life. That’s when I began to dream of writing the kind of books I loved—books that made me laugh, made me cry, and made me think.
The demands of our growing family postponed my writing career until Ken’s work took us to Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba. It was during those long Canadian winters at home with my children that I finally started carving out a few hours of writing time each day while they napped. The moment I started writing, I discovered how much fun it was to use my imagination again and create wonderful characters and stories. I was hooked! As my children grew, I returned to teaching and learned to squeeze in writing time amid the busyness of family life. My Review

As I was reading this I realized that this was the second book in this series and I had not read the first one, that being said, I was not lost, enough information was given that I was able to enjoy this read.
Through the author’s pen we are given an insight into the Word of God and how it applies to everyday life, and we soon see how hard it is for the rich to give up and follow.
Yes, this is a different time, but it could apply to today, and as I was reading this story we put faces on those with much and those who readily share all that they have. Opulence in excess, and then poverty that makes you want to turn you head, but not your heart.
I found myself wanting get to the end of this book, for answers, but not wanting to leave, and now wanting to spend more time with these characters,

My Review

Debbie Macomber gives us a sweet story of love, but also fulfilling your life dreams.
As we read the author gives us both sides of the dilemma that now hounds these two, the beginnings of love.
We also get to see through their eyes the beauty of this desolate land and how these people cope year-round.
There is a theme of food here, and you’re going to love the character of Jack. This story will keep you page turning and wanting more once that final page is turned.

Those four words needed to be expunged from the English language. Seriously. They build some stupid dread that might or might not be warranted. Every time I heard them, my hands started to sweat, and I didn’t even know what the issue was.
I took a sip of my hot chocolate, savoring the taste of the whipped cream before the liquid burned my tongue. I set down my mug, my lips still stinging. I knew better than to drink it that fast, but Mom had distracted me. What on earth did she want to talk about?
Maybe she’d found out I’d been drinking. My stepdad, Steve, wouldn’t have told her, but there were a number of other ways she could’ve found out. In the last few months, she’d been a lot more aware of what was going on around her.
“What’s up?” I asked with mock casualness. Steve sat next to my mom and would not meet my eyes. Heat crept up my neck and my face flushed. This would not be good.
“I got a new job,” Mom said with a grin.
Phew. “Oh, that’s good.” I let out a breath. See, she didn’t have to say, we need to talkand get my nerves up all unnecessarily.
Mom dropped her eyes. “But we have to move.”
Oh, yes, finally! I knew she’d been looking in the city. I’d wanted to move to New York City for years. At least twice a month, Cherise and I hit up parties there. I’d officially be cooler than she was now. I blew on my chocolate, now feeling silly for overreacting.
“Really? That’s awesome. Will we be living in Brooklyn by Sierra?” My sister had lived in New York for the last three years, though when I went, I didn’t see her. She wouldn’t approve of my antics in the city. I only visited her when Mom went too.
“No, love, we’re not moving to the city.” She’d dropped into her pity-mom voice—the one she always used when she delivered bad news.
“I don’t understand.” My hands gripped the hot mug.
“One of the restaurants I interviewed with wants me to open a new location in Tucson, Arizona.”
Wait. What? The room went silent for several long moments. The only sound in the room was the slow drip of the coffee maker. The bitter smell suddenly assaulted my nostrils. Maybe I misheard her.
“Excuse me? Arizona? What about Steve’s job?”
This couldn’t be happening. I had friends here. I was content with the way things were. I had a routine and it was good. This was my life. They couldn’t just up and move me to Arizona.
I wasn’t sure I could even locate that on a map, let alone fathom living there. I’d never been out of the northeast. They didn’t have snow in Arizona.
Nope. This was not happening.
“Steve can work from anywhere,” Mom said. I thought back on the last several months. I should’ve seen this coming—the whispered conversations between her and Steve, her sudden trip out west to visit her sister, mom packing up the guest room. I missed all the signs. It was like sleeping until noon and realizing you missed the sunrise.
I clenched my fists, thinking through all the implications. I didn’t like change, and there had been altogether too much of it lately. “But we don’t need the money, right? Steve makes enough.”
“Sure he does. But this is a great opportunity for me to get back into the business. I miss working.”
I couldn’t go. I was horrible at making new friends, and I liked partying. What if the kids in Arizona didn’t like me? I blinked away tears. “But, Mom, you could get a job at Denny’s. I don’t want to move.” She was a chef. A good one too, but after Dad left, she sank into a deep depression and lost her job. After that, she only worked odd catering jobs. She’d been looking for something better for months.
Her lips formed a tight line. “I’m sorry. The decision has already been made.”
I met my stepdad’s eyes. He loved the snow as much as I did. We hadn’t even had a good snowfall yet this year. “Steve, help me out here.”
He took my mom’s hand. “I’m ready for a change of scenery. This is a good thing. A fresh start. Your mom deserves this.”
“When are we moving?” Given enough time, I might be able to talk her out of it. Show her that I couldn’t move. Maybe I could just move in with my bff, Cherise. Her mom liked me well enough. Yeah. That’s what I’d do. Besides, mom wouldn’t move me in the middle of the school year. That was like GPA suicide. Not that my GPA was any good anyway, but that didn’t matter.
Mom let out a breath.
“Please don’t get upset. We have to move midyear. But it will be okay.”
I knew better than to think we could stay for another six months.
“Maybe Steve and I can stay here until the end of the school year.”
Steve gave my mom a look. “No. I don’t want to be away from her that long.”
My chest tightened. “When?”
“Two weeks.”
“Two weeks?” I shrieked. That was before Christmas. I had plans. Big ones, including watching the ball drop in Times Square on New Years Eve. I’d never been allowed to go by myself before, but this year, Cherise and I had an elaborate plan to go anyway. It included a lot of lies, but they’d always worked before.
Two weeks? This was impossible.
