Book Excerpt

The starting point of that bond is acknowledging his sinfulness:

Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me

(Psalm 51:5).

Do not misread David’s words as an excuse for betraying his wife. It is an admission that sin rules over us from the very beginning of life. And when sin is king, God is not.

According to Scripture, we are all separated from God and, like rebellious children, stand in hostile opposition to our Creator. Separation from and hostility toward God may sound dramatic, but the statement is rooted in biblical reality. Romans 5 clearly illustrates the severe alienation that sin has inflicted on the human race.

Romans 5:8 tells us that we are “sinners” by nature, and Romans 5:10 describes us as “enemies” of God. The apostle Paul traces this predicament back to Adam’s original sin, explaining that disobedience in the Garden of Eden had profound implications for humanity (Romans 5:12). Honestly, “profound” is too kind a word—sin destroyed everything. None of us is immune from its shattering effects.

Adam’s failure introduced sin and brokenness into the world, creating a divide between God and humanity.
