About the Author
KATE DARROCH, 2022 Readers’ Favorite Gold Medallist for Humor, lives on the picturesque Devon coast, where she combines her passion for mystery and for life as it’s lived in other countries to create compelling Travel Cozies and moving Recovery Romances.
Kate’s debut novel, Death in Paris, has won many international book awards, including the 2022 Incipere Award for best Christian Fiction. Kate hopes her readers will enjoy Màiri’s sleuthing adventures as much as she enjoys reading Father Brown, Sherlock Holmes, Anty Boisjoly’s antics, and the Mr Quayle Mysteries.
Next, Kate wrote Huntingdon Hart, a witty, prescient, multi-millionaire, tongue-in-cheek meld of Get Smart, James Bond, and Mycroft Holmes. Hunt’s in love with a much older woman.
Kate’s most recent series is Sweets By the Sea, a Recovery & Redemption Saga of Second Chances for Lasting Love that her readers say is even sweeter than Màiri’s adventures.

So Grateful for Màiri
On the 26th of December, 2021, right after a Virtual Post-Christmas Meetup with my family (there was a COVID re-emergence scare, we were all confined by government fiat to our separate homes) the idea for Death in Paris hit me like an express train.
I had been intending since June 2021 to begin a self-publishing career by writing a historical mystery set in 1812, Belle of Bow Street. By November 2021, I’d completed all the research. In December I wrote the outline, and I wrote Chapter 1 in the week before Christmas. I was looking forward to creating that book enormously, because everything about that period in history – the London setting in emerging Marylebone, then on the “outskirts” of London town (now in the heart of central London); the Quaker outlook on life; and my heroine Belle’s independence and lively family relationships, was and is fascinating to me.
But the Màiri Maguire Cozy Mysteries came to me whole and entire, a Gift from God. You don’t ignore that kind of signal from your muse. Besides, I fell in love with Màiri – she’s such a contradiction, so sweet and trusting and naïve – and yet so capable, never fazed by any of the endless curve balls life throws at her fast and furious. She’s so fiercely loyal. So organised. Yet she allows herself to be emotional and vulnerable, because she trusts her Saviour to look after her. In many ways, Màiri is the person I would like to be. I’m not that person. But I often wish I was.
Màiri came to me in a flash of inspiration, complete with the whole Death in Europe saga.
I sat down right away to write, and just before Easter 2022 Death in Paris the eBook burst upon the world. 9000 copies were downloaded in launch week, and by that week’s end my debut novel had reached #7 in whole of Kindle store. Death in Paris was invited to become an Amazon Prime book. It was Spotlighted by Publishers Weekly. It has since won 17 international book awards, including the Readers’ Favorite Gold Medal for Humor.
That incredible sprint from initial idea to published book – a mere 3 months – is only possible for the self-published writer. If I had submitted that first Màiri book to a traditional publisher as soon as it was written, I would have been very lucky indeed if any publishing house – even one where the commissioning editor loved Màiri as much as I do – were launching my debut novel around about now. So I’m glad and grateful to have been able to give Death in Paris to Cozy readers so swiftly.
To celebrate this book’s “extra” lease on life a Celebration Book Tour is taking the place now, during what might have been the Death in Paris launch week if my debut Cozy mystery had been published in the old way.
I love Màiri. I hope that you will love her too. I’ve written a lot of stories about Màiri, and I intend to write many more. I have at least a hundred ideas for stories for her that I haven’t had time to put on paper yet. Enjoy!
