Belle Comes Out of the Shadows

I am so thrilled that the first book in the Belle of Bow Street series, A Death Observed, a historical murder mystery set in 1812, is at last ready for launch.

Research began for this series in June 2021, so this is one time where a self-published novel has taken as long to reach readers as would have happened as a matter of course if it had been traditionally published. The research process was fascinating. The novel is set in Marylebone in London in the winter of 1812. Marylebone High Street is right in the heart of Central London, just off Oxford Street. At one time I lived in Marylebone High Street and worked in an office block in Saville Row, which is just off Regent Street, a brisk 15 minute walk from Marylebone High Street. So I know the area well.

But Marylebone was a very different place in 1812, when it was a village on the ‘outskirts’ of Londontown, respectable, but certainly not salubrious. It was home mainly to merchants and tradesmen who lived above their shops and places of business. Belle’s family are not merchants; they are scholars, and very wealthy by our standards, although not fabulously wealthy like the noble classes of the period. Belle inherits a house in Marylebone High Street from her godmother and her whole family chooses to live in that house, even though Belle’s father (a one-time Oxford don who is now the Astronomer Royal) spends three nights a week at Greenwich Observatory, a long horse-ride from their home, a dangerous journey by night.

Being Quakers, Belle and her family believe in hard work; and in following the Light. They feel strongly about bettering the lot of the poor. The poor – that is the working classes, the class into which I was born – had a dreadful time if they lived in London in the 19^th century, as those of you who have read Charles Dickens have cause to suspect. That’s why Belle and her family chose to live in Marylebone, where there is a Ragged School and an Infirmary.

Researching those establishments – which no longer exist – and the whole history of Marylebone during the period was much easier for me than it might have been, because I am a member of the Marylebone Society, a local community effort to preserve the history of this “village” within London. The Society publishes several books about Marylebone during the period when this novel is set, and the member meetings are a wonderful treasure trove of members old and young who are steeped in Marylebone’s history, often passed down from mother to child across generations, creating the closest thing to eye-witness accounts possible in today’s world. I am most grateful to the Marylebone Society and our membership for many colourful accounts of life in Marylebone in 1812.

By November 2021, I’d completed all the research. I was looking forward to telling the story enormously, because everything about the Quakers during that period in history – and the tempestuous history of Marylebone, in 1812 barely respectable, today so glamorous – and Belle’s independence and lively family relationships, so untypical of the period and yet so authentic in context, was and is fascinating to me.

But for nearly two years my writing time (a commodity in short supply) was devoted to the various Màiri Maguire Cozy Mysteries, and so it is only now that Belle is ready to take her place in the fictional world of early 19^th century crime and the birth of modern policing.

Don’t think that because the background and setting is authentic A Death Observed is a dull book! Marylebone in 1812 was a hotbed of fascinating and unusual crimes and of approaches to criminology which make modern crime scenes seem tame by comparison. Belle’s unusual take on the world in which she lives is not a crime-solving scenario that you will see in many other historical mysteries. In fact, so far as I know, it is unique.

Eliza Graham's novels have been long-listed for the UK's Richard & Judy Summer Book Club in the UK, and short-listed for World Book Day's 'Hidden Gem' competition. She has also been nominated for the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction and the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction.

Her books have been bestsellers both in Europe and the US.

She is fascinated by the world of the 1930s and 1940s: the Second World War and its immediate aftermath and the trickle-down effect on future generations. Consequently she's made trips to visit bunkers in Brittany, decoy harbours in Cornwall, wartime radio studios in Bedfordshire and cemeteries in Szczecin, Poland. And those are the less obscure research trips.

It was probably inevitable that Eliza would pursue a life of writing. She spent biology lessons reading Jean Plaidy novels behind the textbooks, sitting at the back of the classroom. In English and history lessons she sat right at the front, hanging on to every word. At home she read books while getting dressed and cleaning her teeth. During school holidays she visited the public library multiple times a day.

At Oxford University she studied English Literature, which didn't teach her much about writing a modern novel, but expanded her knowledge of the literary canon and how people have used books and words to communicate with one another since Saxon times.

She has worked as a 'Saturday' girl in Marks & Spencer, an entrance-hall cleaner, a trainee banker and as a PR consultant and business writer, covering subjects from long-tail insurance risks to jumbo factory loo rolls.

Eliza lives in an ancient village in the Oxfordshire countryside with her family. Not far from her house there is a large perforated sarsen stone that can apparently summon King Alfred if you blow into it correctly. Eliza has never managed to summon him. Her interests still mainly revolve around reading, but she also enjoys walking in the downland country around her home and travelling around the world to research her novels.

My Review

This is a very different WWII story, with roots in the Great War, and being swept up in fascism, and the affects it has on a family in Great Britten.
The author gives us a lot in a story, and as we delve deeper into the book, answers do come along with some great surprises.
We are given some sweet romance, along with the horrible bombing in the streets of London, and the compassion of helping those less fortunate. This is also a dual time read, 2020 back to 1938, although most of this takes place in the late 30's.
The author does a wonderful job of bringing a look at life of a family during WWII!
I received this book through Net Galley and Storm Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.

My Review

This read kept me smiling, and sometimes laughing out loud!
A story that makes you want to whisper in the ear, and tell them to open their eyes.
This is the third book about the Rebels, and this is Jemma, Lisette's story, along with Vicar Miles!
With this read Jemma promised her grandmother to marry, she was so opposed, and now she thinks she needs lessons.
This is such a fun story about those who need to open their eyes and see what is right in front of them.
I received this book through the Publisher Shadow Mountain, and was not required to give a positive review.

Why me? Why this? Why now? How am I going to heal from this pain? Where are you, Lord?

These are the questions I often asked when I stayed awake in the night, with tears burning down my cheeks. I needed a new perspective, a deeper understanding, and the assurance of God’s love and good plans in my painful experiences. I longed for comfort and hope, and help to fix my eyes on the divine transformation going on in my heart.

Do you face the same struggles?

We all do. We all need a biblical perspective and a new look at suffering to help us reconcile our painful experiences with what we know about God. Suffering remains a mystery and there is no simple theological answer to it. But what is our role? What are we supposed to think and do when we go through undeserved and unexpected pain and trauma?

The first and most important is to learn to see our dark moments as new chances and opportunities to draw near to God. We can choose to take off the glasses of loss and replace them with the lenses of God’s love, biblical truths, and thankfulness. Then our outlook will change and we will see more of the bigger picture. We can choose to live with open minds, believing God’s Word, with hands raised in prayer. We can commit to putting every effort into finding the balance between the reality we live in and the reality in which we live with God. It is in this balance of our reality and God’s reality that we find peace instead of fear, rest instead of anxiety, and wholeness instead of destruction.

Our painful experiences are glorious opportunities to draw near to God, to bond with Him, and to enjoy intimacy and fellowship with Him amidst the pain. This is the most important thing we can do in our lives because everything else results from bonding and connection. A loving connection with God births maturity, growth, transformation, and eternal blessings. Besides that, suffering is a privilege and a possibility to take part in our Lord’s sufferings and to know the power of His resurrection.

When we choose to listen and draw near to God in our pains, something miraculous will happen. God’s Spirit will birth blessings and precious gifts out of the pain.
