A Plain Leaving (The Sisters of Lancaster County #1) by Leslie Gould

At age twenty, Jessica Bachman left her two beloved sisters and her Amish community after clashing with the new bishop about her role in the family and the future of their farm. She tried to convince Silas Kemp, who'd been courting her for two years, to join her, but when he said no, she fled anyway.

Three years later, she returns home for the first time since leaving Lancaster to attend her father's funeral. Her arrival back revives all sorts of emotions--yearnings and sorrows alike. Jessica knows things will never return to how they were. But in seeing Silas again, she can't help but wonder what might have been.

Struggling to decide where her next step should take her, she learns the story of a Revolutionary War-era ancestor that echoes her own choices. Will Jessica leave her family and community forever, or is there peace and healing and love yet to come?

My Review

An in-depth look into an Amish family, spanning centuries, from current time to revolutionary times, an all on the same property in Lancaster area Pennsylvania.
There is so much pain here, and when the story opens we are brought to the farm because of the death of the father. The author keeps us on ours toes, and yes this is a family story, but it is also the lands story. Can relate to some that goes on here, living on a farm that has been in our family since 1855, and having been contacted about fracking.
The thought about destroying the land will make you cringe, and yes we are all human, no matter how we worship. The author has us thinking about the center of a family, and how easily it can be torn apart, and as we travel through the past, and way back we are going, and then the present, and a look at the future.
Tangled relationships here, and we have to get to the very end of the book for answers, and yes this is a real page-turner, I could not put it down before I knew how it ended.
I received this book through Bethany House Publishers and was not required to give a positive review.

The Dishonorable Miss Delancey (Regency Brides: A Legacy of Grace, #3) by Carolyn Miller

Will a damaged reputation and desire for society's approval thwart the legacy of grace?
Tainted by scandal and forced to leave London for the quieter Brighton countryside, the Honorable Miss Clara DeLancey is a shadow of her former society self. She's lost the man she loved to another and, in a culture that has no patience for self-pity, is struggling with depression. A chance encounter brings her a healing friendship with the sisters of an injured naval captain. But Clara's society mama is appalled at the new company she's keeping.
Captain Benjamin Kemsley is not looking for a wife. But his gallant spirit won't let him ignore the penniless viscount's daughter--not when she so obviously needs assistance to keep moving forward from day to day. Can he protect his heart and still keep her safe?
When they're pushed into the highest echelons of society at the Prince Regent's Brighton Pavilion, this mismatched couple must decide if family honor is more important than their hopes. Can they right the wrongs of the past and find future happiness together--without finances, family support, or royal favor?

My Review

I am rather sad to say goodbye to this A Legacy of Grace series, and this book like the others is so good.
I learned to really dislike Miss DeLancy in the first two books, but by the end of this one I had a complete change of mind. This time the author has us walking in Clara DeLancy’s shoes and I came to respect her, especially when she found faith. What a changed individual she has become, and made me think that maybe the cause of a lot of her problems was her mother?
We are back with the Ton and experience a lot of society, what a completely different way of life, and what a life of luxury. We are able to keep our focus with the addition of everyday people, including a pastor and his wife. The little sister is a delight, and her brother becomes a person of interest in the affairs of Miss Delancy.
Each of these books can be read alone, but they are all so good you don’t want to miss the enjoyment that they afford.
I received this book through Kregel Publishing and their Blogger Program, and was not required to give a positive review.

A blast from the past gets Nashville PI and coffeehouse manager Juliet Langley in hot water in this explosive mystery from the USA Today bestselling author of Death Before Decaf.

As a newly minted private eye, Juliet Langley has sworn to leave homicide to the authorities, limiting the scope of her investigations to cheating spouses and dirty business partners . . . like her ex-fiancĂ©, Scott O’Malley. When Scott shows up unannounced at her coffeehouse, Java Jive, Juliet’s first instinct is to punch him in the nose. Her second is to turn down his desperate plea for help with a case that’s way too dangerous for her liking. But when Scott drops dead before her eyes, Juliet isn’t going to wait around for someone else to clear her name. It’s only a matter of time before her tumultuous past with her ex-fiancĂ© comes out, so Juliet teams up with her ex-boyfriend, police detective Ryder Hamilton, to figure out who poisoned Scott. They soon confirm that Scott was involved in an illegal scheme that’s definitely grounds for concern. Just as romance is finally beginning to percolate for Juliet and her best friend, Pete Bennett, she has no choice but to head back to her hometown to seek out the truth. When that dream goes up in flames, she accepts a spot in a mysterious baking contest—one she doesn’t remember entering. She travels to a bustling, medieval village off the coast of France and discovers an enchanting world of magic and mystery, and learns that she, too, possesses powers.

She juggles relationships with a sweet new friend, a snarky baking fire, and a brooding, handsome baker. As Imogen falls for this bewitching world, she fears she won’t master her magic in time to win the job of Royal Head Baker, and will be forced to return to the shambles of her non magical life.
It only gets worse, when a competitor drops dead in the middle of the big white baking tent, and Imogen’s the prime suspect. Now, she’ll not only have to survive the vampire and psychic judges, but also clear her name by finding the real murderer, before they strike again.
With a killer on the loose, a missing prince, and the Summer Solstice Festival fast approaching, Imogen will have to bake like her life depends on it- because it just might.

Great Escapes Virtual Book Tours Presents: In It For The Boney by David Burnsworth & Giveaway

In It For The Money (A Blu Carraway Mystery) by David Burnsworth

Mystery/Suspense 1st in Series Henery Press (September 12, 2017)
Paperback: 278 pages
ISBN-13: 978-1635112436 E-Book
ASIN: B072N5TVLG

Lowcountry Private Investigator Blu Carraway needs a new client. He’s broke and the tax man is coming for his little slice of paradise. But not everyone appreciates his skills. Some call him a loose cannon. Others say he’s a liability. All the ex-Desert Storm Ranger knows is his phone hasn’t rung in quite a while. Of course, that could be because it was cut off due to delinquent payments.
Lucky for him, a client does show up at his doorstep—a distraught mother with a wayward son. She’s rich and her boy’s in danger. Sounds like just the case for Blu. Except nothing about the case is as it seems. The jigsaw pieces—a ransom note, a beat-up minivan, dead strippers, and a missing briefcase filled with money and cocaine—do not make a complete puzzle. The first real case for Blu Carraway Investigations in three years goes off the rails.
And that’s the way he prefers it to be.

Guest Post with Julie Mulhern

I recently had a conversation with a Millenial (I’m old enough to be her mother), who shared with me her criteria for selecting a book.

She reads the last paragraph.

The last.

“You what?” I spluttered, not quite believing what I’d heard.

“I don’t want to waste my time reading a book if I don’t like the ending,” she explained.

Someone (someone other than me) needs to explain the joys of genre fiction to this young woman.

In romance, there’s a happily ever after. In a fantasy, the quest is completed (true, it may take seven books—but that’s a different discussion). And, in a mystery, the murderer is revealed. Readers know that going in, before they’ve cracked the cover (or clicked on the one-click button).

These endings are guaranteed. The important part of the book isn’t the ending, it’s the journey to the ending, the obstacles the characters must overcome. Obstacles like secret babies, hordes of demons, or a woman locked in a freezer overnight.

My young, read-the-ending-first friend did admit, “I’ve ruined some great books doing this.”

One would think so.

Please, from the bottom of my mystery-writing heart, don’t skip to the end of the book. And for the love of all that is holy, don’t start there!
