Family secrets. Historical wrongs. And the truths that refuse to stay buried.
Savannah
Webster is trying to find her way forward. She and her husband, Hez,
have been separated since tragedy tore them apart and he began numbing
his grief and guilt with alcohol. She returned to Tupelo Grove
University, which her family helped found over a century ago, to teach
history.
When Hez turns up in her classroom asking
for a second chance, she rejects the idea immediately. But twenty-four
hours later she’s under suspicion for murder, and since Hez is the best
attorney she knows, she reluctantly asks him for help. They suspect the
murder is tied to someone selling off the university’s pre-Columbian
artifacts, but the secrets go much deeper than they realize.
The
only hope they’ve got is each other, and they’re going to have to put
their past behind them if they’re going to stay alive long enough to
uncover all that’s hidden.

Rick Acker writes novels during his commute to and from his "real job" as a Supervising Deputy Attorney General in the California Department of Justice. His unit prosecutes corporate fraud lawsuits of the type described in the #1 bestseller, WHEN THE DEVIL WHISTLES, which award-winning author Colleen Coble describes as "a legal thriller you won't want to miss!"
Rick has led investigations and lawsuits that made headlines in and out of California. Most recently, he and his team won a string record-breaking judgments and settlements against the Wall Street players who created the toxic mortgage securities that triggered the Great Recession. Before joining DOJ, Rick was a senior litigator at Bingham McCutchen, where he worked on high stakes litigation, including a fight between two owners of the San Francisco Forty-Niners and a multibilllion dollar international fraud case. Rick has law degrees from the University of Oslo and the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated with honors. In addition to his novels, he is a contributing author on two legal treatises published by the American Bar Association.
When Rick isn't writing or lawyering, you can usually find him with his wife, Anette, and their four children. They'll be exploring in the hills east of San Francisco, watching a good movie together, or, of course, reading. You can visit him on the web at www.rickacker.com
My Review
A read that will keep you on the edge of your seat! People that aren't really what they seem, and whom can you trust.
We are given a couple whose marriage has gone south, especially dealing with the grief that has engulfed both of them.
Now
these two are together with him trying to defend her when she is
accused of murder, with a divorce hanging over their heads. Can he help
her?
So many surprises, and a lot going on, including finding
family members! There are thefts, murders, kidnapping, and arrests, but
whom and what is going on?
There are a lot of bomb shells dropped, including the epilogue at the end, and now I can't wait for book two!
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Thomas Nelson, and was not required to give a positive review.
