More Than a Marriage by Amy Lillard

In the close-knit Amish community of Wells Landing, Oklahoma, a women’s quilting circle welcomes a new member who is struggling to keep her marriage together—or let it go . . .

Quiet and unassuming Tess Smiley is new to Wells Landing. She is also newly married to Jacob Smiley. But already she is finding that married life isn’t the gentle union of contented devotion she had envisioned. Rather, the old-fashioned qualities that had endeared her to Jacob have become a source of inner confusion. As his father did with his wife, Jacob has begun treating Tess like a servant, taking her for granted, no longer surprising her with little presents. And once he began his job at the Englisch shed company, he has become more interested in his company smartphone than in spending time with Tess . . .

Jacob can’t see what Tess is upset about and continues his boorish ways, ignoring her pleas to attend marriage classes. Tess loves Jacob with all her heart, but it’s her heart that tells her she must take a stand. With surprising determination, she asks for help from her new community and is welcomed into the home of her friend Clara Rose and her husband Obie. Only then does Jacob begin to see how deeply his behavior has hurt Tess. But is he too late? He may be contrite, but he will need to show much more than that to win her love all over again.

About The Author

Amy Lillard is a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.
I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I’ve retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I’m from Texas. (?)  Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son–a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!
I love homemade tacos, shoes, and romance novels–not necessarily in that order. I’m a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I’m shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.
I  believe that God is love. I guess that’s why I adore romances.
I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I’m a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture.  I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that’s me June Cleaver with a laptop.
I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I’ll get to it or I won’t, either way I’m good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I’m alone on this last one, and again, I’m good with it.)
Favorite movies–(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940′s movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven’t seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn’s and Audrey’s.

My Review

am thrilled to be back in Well Landing, and visiting the Amish Community there, and in particular we visit with Tess and Jacob Smiley, and their marriage problems.
Wait you begin to think, there can’t be marriage problems in an Amish marriage, but oh yes, they are human, and like us all we all perceive things differently. Both feel the other spouse is ignoring them, and they are not appreciated, and the other doesn’t do enough, or do they.
Tess is ready to throw in towel and go home to mother, ah so typical or old fashioned, but in reality can these two work out their problems? Yes, they do have some, but so does everyone; it is just how you respond to them that makes the difference.
While we are enjoying or working on Jacob and Tess’s problems we met up with old friends and become updated on the goings on of the folks we have come to love, and although you don’t have to have read the other books in this series to enjoy this one, you may want to for enjoyment. Oh yes, the twins have been born.

Annie's Recipe (Hope Chest of Dreams #2) by Lisa Jones Baker

Three young Amish women, each gifted with a hand-carved hope chest, find that one by one, with patience and faith, their most blessed dreams for the future can come true...

Annie Mast and Levi Miller were best friends until his father was shunned by the church. Now, ten years later, Levi has returned to Arthur, Illinois, for a brief visit, and he and Annie discover their bond is as strong as ever. Spending as much time together as possible, Annie finds herself dreaming of a future with Levi. And Levi is soon dreaming of building a home on a beautiful local hillside--to live in with Annie. Yet their longings are unlikely to become reality...
Levi is part of the English world, and while Annie cannot see herself there, she knows she must reveal her heart's truth to him. And Levi, strongly reminded of his Amish roots, knows he must heal the bitterness of the past. And together, with love on their side, they just may find their way to an answered prayer.

About The Author

Lisa Jones Baker grew up near a small Amish town in Illinois that she frequented with her family on weekends. She's also a dog lover and a fan of Scottsdale, Arizona, where she spent nearly two decades. Lisa graduated from Illinois State University with a French major, has been on 5 out of 7 continents, and considers her parents the best in the world. Raised in a Christian home, Lisa has always been blessed with love and support.

My Review

Annie has a dilemma that only she and maybe her soul mate and long lost friend Levi Miller can solve, and that is to leave her faith and marry Levi or loose him. You have to hope for the best for these two, and how to make a life changing decision, when Levi cannot think of returning to the Amish, especially after the shunning of his father.
What would I do or you? If we had to make a choice, and there is a lot more to the story than these two seem to think. Annie seems to have her family pulling her one way and Levi to his credit seems to give her time to think about her decision. He is also having a hard time with wanting Annie and what she would have to do to become his wife.
I loved that Rebecca came back into the story and tells what happened to her, we are then reminded of the first book in this series and what transpired there, and it does having a bit of baring on this story. You are in for a treat and more, especially when the recipe for the sponge cake appears at the end. Enjoy!

My Review

Would You Like To Know Collection is perfect for every parent or grandparent to have in their home, and share with their little ones, ages 3 to 5, and just right for their little hands.
Loved that it comes in a hard cardboard container to store the six little books in, and the books are made of sturdy paper, so the little guy can hold it himself, and mine sure did. The pages are filled with what we want our children to know about our Christian faith, and made so they look at the colorful pictures that draw them in.
These little books are beautifully illustrated and draw your little ones in for a perfect message for them, just a few short pages in each topic, with the messages you will want for them. A must for each parent and grandparent to share their faith with those that are important to them.

My Review

This is the second book in this series that I have read, and yes it is just as good as the first, and once you turn that first page, you won’t be putting it down. Now if you haven’t read the first book, don’t worry, enough information is given that you won’t be lost, but you will be wanting to read Cold Shot!
There are a couple of stories going on here, as there would be in real life, but for Avery this one is personal, one of her friends is missing, and she is feeling guilty about it. Avery has found Christ and has turned her life around, and we can only hope she shared with Skylar, as this story revolves around the picture of her in death.
Did you ever have the feeling that someone was watching you, Avery better start looking over her shoulder, but why, and who is doing this? We take a jagged trail to find the answers here, but all the while we keep hoping for romance between Avery and Parker, whom I would love to hear him talk!
From the first to the last page the book will have you page turning with you heart in your throat, and yes you have to get to the end to get the answers, and now we have to wait for the next book in this series.

My Review

This review does come with a warning, once you pick this book up your not going to be able to put it down, action packed from the beginning to the end. I even thought once we were off the roller coaster, and guess what, not!
We are back with the Elite Guardians, and this is the third book in the series, and it is just as good as the other two thrillers, and you are not going to be disappointed. Now you don’t have to have read the first two to enjoy this one, but once you read one of them you are going to be hooked and want more.
This one is a personal one, with Maddy McKay, a member of the Elite, and Quinn Holcombe a FBI investigator, and someone wants these two dead, and it has to be in the right order. Wow, we go from one terror scene to another and then quickly to another, this evil person seems to be brilliant and uses his smarts to hurt others, will these two be able to survive all that is about to happen?
I for one cannot wait for the next book in this series, and it can’t come soon enough, I loved reading this thrilling page-turner.

My Review

Found myself quickly absorbed in this fast pace story, and when it was over, I wanted more, and can’t wait for the next one.
There is an arsonist loose in this Amish Community, and you can imagine the horror as teacher Lillian sees the fire headed towards her school. Now why would anyone want to hurt these kind people? Will the school be destroyed along with the occupants? This is the kind of danger that is posed though out this book.
I could sympathize with Lillian and her dilemma as far as Timothy and her secret, so very sad, and yet I kept the hope that they would be able to find a solution and end up together.
This is a story that is going to pull your heartstrings, and make you keep page turning to get to the end.

The Good at Heart: A Novel by Ursula Werner

Based on the author’s discoveries about her great-grandfather, this stunning debut novel takes place over three days when World War II comes to the doorstep of an ordinary German family living in an idyllic, rural village near the Swiss border.

When World War II breaks out, Edith and Oskar Eberhardt move their family—their daughter, Marina; son-in-law, Franz; and their granddaughters—out of Berlin and into a small house in the quiet town of Blumental, near Switzerland. A member of Hitler’s cabinet, Oskar is gone most of the time, and Franz begins fighting in the war, so the women of the house are left to their quiet lives in the picturesque village.

But life in Blumental isn’t as idyllic as it appears. An egotistical Nazi captain terrorizes the citizens he’s assigned to protect. Neighbors spy on each other. Some mysteriously disappear. Marina has a lover who also has close ties to her family and the government. Thinking none of them share her hatred of the Reich, she joins a Protestant priest smuggling Jewish refugees over the nearby Swiss border. The latest “package” is two Polish girls who’ve lost the rest of their family, and against her better judgment, Marina finds she must hide them in the Eberhardt’s cellar. Everything is set to go smoothly until Oskar comes home with the news that the Führer will be visiting the area for a concert, and he will be making a house call on the Eberhardts.

Based on the author’s discoveries about her great-grandfather, this extraordinary debut, full of love, tragedy, and suspense, is a sensitive portrait of a family torn between doing their duty for their country and doing what’s right for their country, and especially for those they love.

My Review

I love stories that are based on fact, and this one did not let me down, from the first page forward we get an in-depth look at the lives of the Eberhardt family, and the parts they played in WWII over a two-day period.
Made me think how I would feel if my father was involved with something that I detested, and then deciding to go him against by helping others. We are in a small village in Germany in 1944 and the family has just found out they are to serve the Furhur or Emperor as he is also know, at a coffee, he doesn’t like tea, that is English.
We see jealousy, greed, and pure hate, and yet life must go on, and at what costs, and what can be done? Things are not always as we perceive, and that is exactly what those that are looking to help hope.
I found myself right there in this picturesque setting, with so much evil surrounding and it, and yet they are not untouched by what is happening. We see those who cannot stand the atrocities, and others who love that they are benefiting, yes sad.
We should not forget what happened here, and this puts faces on a place far away from where we live. Should be a mandated read.

EXCERPT:
Spotting Suzanna, her business partner and best friend, already inside, Jillian grabbed the brass door handle and opened the door to Tangled Charms. “That man can be so frustrating.” Suzanna glanced up from where she was arranging baked goods and fresh brewed coffee on a small table with a white tablecloth. “Good morning to you too. I’m guessing you didn’t have such a good weekend.” “My weekend was fine until I ran into him.” Suzanna tucked a lock of her short dark hair behind her ear. “I take it Glenn was in town again.” “Glenn? Why would you think that?” Suzanna’s eyes widened. “I just thought…well, you were going on and…never mind. Who are you talking about?” “Avery.” “Oh.” Suzanna’s pink glossy lips stayed in that ‘O’ shape as though she were surprised by this news. She held out her hand for Jillian’s container of muffins. Jillian relinquished the baked goods. “You mean you didn’t hear that he arrived home last night? I didn’t think anything happened around this town without everyone knowing.” “Yeah, I heard, but I didn’t know you two had run into each other.” Suzanna placed the muffin container off to the side of the table. “We ran into each other all right. He practically ran me over.” Suzanna’s brows rose. “Really? I can’t wait to hear this.” “Hear what?” Suzanna frowned at her. “You know, whatever he’s done now to get you all fired up.” “He didn’t do anything.” Suddenly she regretted bringing up the subject. She’d promised herself that she wouldn’t let him get under her skin. “It’s nothing.” “It sure sounded like something.” Suzanna stared at her as though trying to read her mind. “Come on. Spill. It’s me. We’ve told each other everything since we were kids.”

My Review

This book brings back the realities of war and we are back in Nazi Germany, with a Jewish woman, and an unrelated baby. While the author took liberties with the characters and the story, the fact that it is based on fact, makes me want to cringe, how terrible.
The book kept my riveted and I kept page turning to find the answers, who was the betrayer, and yet I don’t know if I found out, and I loved the Epilogue, with a big thank you to the author, who doesn’t like to look down that long road.
Interesting place to hide, the circus, and all that goes along with it, and would I like to fly, never! Can’t imagine taking that up at any time during my life, but pretraining, in the form of gymnastics, yes!
The author has done a wonderful job bringing this story to life, we can never understand why people did the things that led to the horrible atrocities that were committed, but we sure don’t want to forget.

The Chilbury Ladies' Choir by Jennifer Ryan

"Just because the men have gone to war, why do we have to close the choir? And precisely when we need it most!"

As England enters World War II's dark early days, spirited music professor Primrose Trent, recently arrived to the village of Chilbury, emboldens the women of the town to defy the Vicar's stuffy edict to shutter the church's choir in the absence of men and instead 'carry on singing'. Resurrecting themselves as "The Chilbury Ladies' Choir", the women of this small village soon use their joint song to lift up themselves, and the community, as the war tears through their lives.

Told through letters and journals, The Chilbury Ladies' Choir moves seamlessly from budding romances to village intrigues to heartbreaking matters of life and death. As we come to know the struggles of the charismatic members of this unforgettable outfit -- a timid widow worried over her son at the front; the town beauty drawn to a rakish artist; her younger sister nursing an impossible crush and dabbling in politics she doesn't understand; a young Jewish refugee hiding secrets about her family, and a conniving midwife plotting to outrun her seedy past -- we come to see how the strength each finds in the choir's collective voice reverberates in her individual life.

In turns funny, charming and heart-wrenching, this lovingly executed ensemble novel will charm and inspire, illuminating the true spirit of the women on the home front, in a village of indomitable spirit, at the dawn of a most terrible conflict.

About The Author

Hello, and thank you for being interested in my author page. I'm the author of The Chilbury Ladies' Choir, which is coming out February 14th, 2017. It is my very first novel. Before becoming a writer, I was a nonfiction book editor, editing books about politics and economics, travel and health, and biography and memoir. I worked in London before moving to the Washington, DC, area ten years ago with my husband and two children.

I was born in a village in Kent, England, not too far away from the fictional village of Chilbury. The novel is based on the stories of my grandmother who was twenty when the Second World War began, mostly hilarious tales about bumping into people in the blackout, singing in the air raid shelters, and the freedoms women had during the war years--the excitement and romance. She also belonged to a choir, and her choir stories dramatized the camaraderie and support they all took away; the knowledge that they weren't in this alone. The Chilbury Ladies' Choir uses my dear grandmother's stories as its backdrop.

If you have read The Chilbury Ladies' Choir, thank you. I very much hope that you liked it. And if you have yet to read it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I loved writing it.

My Review

The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir is a series of letters and journal entries that capture a time from March to August 1940 in a small English Village, and a time that we all know now is the advancement of Germany in Europe.
We meet the people of the village and what they are going though during this period, and learn history at the same time, guess I was not aware that England was being bombed at this era.
A lot does happen here in this quaint town and we quickly turn pages to find answers, so of which we are not going to be happy about. These people are really open about their feelings and speak very openly in their written words, and we feel like we are watching them in real life. You are going to really like some of these individuals and others walk on the shady side, and I had to chuckle at the end of the book about one of them.
A real eye opener of life in England prior to America getting into WWII, and yes I remember that Pearl Harbor awakened a sleeping giant, and the German’s must have been cringing when that happened.
I received this book through Blogging For Books, and was not required to give a positive review.

About The Author

Christine Poulson

Before Christine Poulson turned to crime, she was a respectable academic with a PhD in History of Art and had written widely on nineteenth-century art and literature. During her career as an art historian, she worked as a curator of ceramics at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery and as curator for the William Morris Society at Kelmscott House in Hammersmith, London. She taught for the Open University and was a lecturer in Art History at a college in Cambridge. The city of Cambridge and the surrounding Fens, with their unique, sometimes sinister atmosphere, provided the setting for her first novel and she was spurred on by her own experience of being made redundant. Her most recent work of non-fiction, a book on Arthurian legend in British Art,1840-1920, was short listed for a Mythopoeic Award in the USA in 2002.
Christine is happy to give readings from her work and to talk about how to write a first novel. You can contact her at christine@christinepoulson.co.uk.

My Review

A book that will make you think, and it could possibly happen, and probably has, the falsifying of results in the lab to push drugs through.
The premise of a drug that will fight obesity, and what a wonderful drug that would be, no more dieting and exercise, not quite, but sure would be the magic pill, that is until someone dies. We are following a young lab technician and her quest to find a drug to help children born with rare genetic illness, and then we are in the lab with the people who are working on the obesity drug.
While greed and prestige does play a big part in this book, there is also the human story of a young little girl afflicted with a very rare illness, and our hope for answers. Then glimpses of hope, but at what cost, another little ones entire life and happiness, these decisions have to be made, and we hope for the best, especially as we put faces to these people.
This book will have you page turning from the first to the very last, and we feel like we are walking in their shoes.
I received this book through Kregel Publishing, and was not required to give a positive review.
