Forward by Spencer Christian As a young child, I was much like the little girl in this book - intensely curious about the wonders of the natural world - asking questions such as those put forth by young Gabriela, “Why is the sky blue; why are leaves green?” My search for answers took me on a fascinating path of discovery, which eventually led me to become a national TV weather forecaster. If the child in you - or a child you know - finds the world to be a wondrous place, your path to discovery can be found in the pages of “Colors of the Sun and Moon.” “Colors of the Sun and Moon” is the story of 8-year-old Gabriela and her wise and loving grandmother - a grandmother who has the answers to all of her precious granddaughter's questions about the world of wonders they see around them. While Abuela's answers are simple enough for a young child to understand, they are factual and scientifically sound. I applaud author Talia Aikens-Nuñez for giving her readers a story that is appealing on so many levels: it is educational, entertaining, and family-focused. What a rare combination of elements! As I read “Colors of the Sun and Moon,” images from my own childhood flashed in my mind, and I found myself smiling in amusement and amazement. I feel certain that the young reader and the not-so-young reader in your home will enjoy this book as much as I did. - Spencer Christian, Weather Anchor for ABC 7/KGO-TV, San Francisco

More Than A Promise (Wells Landing Quilting Circle #2) by Amy Lillard

At the heart of the Amish community of Wells Landing, Oklahoma, a women’s quilting circle rallies around a member who is suddenly alone, under unusual circumstances…

One of the only women in the quilting circle without children, Mariana Miller prayed to be blessed with a little one throughout fifteen years of marriage. But now, newly widowed, Mariana discovers she’s pregnant—with twins! How will she support herself and the babies, not to mention stay healthy when the doctor puts her on bed rest? As neighbors band together to help, Mariana is more grateful than ever for the Amish community. She especially looks forward to visits from Reuben Weisel, her late husband’s business partner and best friend. Reuben’s quiet strength comforts her—until he proposes marriage…
Honorable and loyal, there’s no doubt Reuben sincerely wants to provide for Mariana and the twins. Never married, he can now be a good husband and father. So long as the bishop approves, to wed him is a sensible choice—and an unexpected gift. But when Mariana discovers there is more behind Reuben’s proposal than she thought, their fragile agreement and fledgling love will be put to the test.

About The Author

Amy Lillard is a wife, mother, and bona fide Southern belle. Published author, expert corn bread maker, and Squirrel Princess.
I live in Tulsa, though I was born in Mississippi. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after. I’ve retained a little of my Mississippi accent though most people think I’m from Texas. (?)  Rob and I have been married for over twenty years and have a son–a mom proclaimed prodigy, of course!
I love homemade tacos, shoes, and romance novels–not necessarily in that order. I’m a big fan of country music, a staunch proponent of saving the Oxford comma, and I’m shamefully obsessed with all things Harry Potter.
I  believe that God is love. I guess that’s why I adore romances.
I have always been intrigued with the Amish culture, their gentle ways and slower-paced lifestyle. (And I love, love, love the fact that they stay married for their lifetime.) But until recently I never thought to blend this interest with my penchant for romance. Okay, okay, I’m a bit old-fashioned and even enjoy the gender roles that are present in this culture.  I love to cook and take care of my family. Yes, that’s me June Cleaver with a laptop.
I dislike people trying to convince me to read the Twlight series (I’ll get to it or I won’t, either way I’m good with it), gratuitous violence, and strawberry ice cream. (I know I’m alone on this last one, and again, I’m good with it.)
Favorite movies–(besides HP) French Kiss, Maid of Honor, A Lot Like Love, Just Married, and Sweet Home Alabama. Oh, and Miss Congeniality, Sabrina (both versions) and a 1940′s movie called Dear Ruth. If you haven’t seen it, you should! A-dorable. Anything with Doris Day and most all of Marilyn’s and Audrey’s.

My Review

We are back in Wells Landing, Oklahoma and our Amish community, and this is Marina Miller story, a woman who has just buried her husband. Now facing the loneliness of widowhood, she is trying to plan how she will go about to support herself, and she is expecting a new little one.
Marina and her husband had been married for fifteen years and they never had a child, and now he is gone and not able to be with her and their little one. How heartbreaking, and yes you will need tissues as we watch what happens in her life, and yes there are some blessings.
Some come in the form of her deceased husband’s business partner Ruben, and you won’t believe how he comes to the rescue, I loved the things he does!
This is a very fast read; I read it in one evening, and not only is it fast is a read I found that I didn’t want it to end.

As they join forces to investigate a murder in St. Augustine, Florida, Claire is thrust into a situation far more dangerous than she'd anticipated, pushing her disorder to a breaking point. Just when she fears she can't trust her own mind, she discovers Nick's personal connection to the case—and wonders whether she can trust anyone at all.

A lifelong Ohioan, Karen and her husband Don divide their time between the midwest and the southeast, both locations she has used in her books. If you enjoy a story with non-stop action, this is surely the book for you, there is constantly something happening and you will never know who is the next victim.
Claire Britten has started her own forensic psychologist agency, and after winning a case, and riding a high, she is offered a job she cannot refuse. She doesn’t like leaving her precocious preschool daughter, but the money is very good and it will help her career, what she doesn’t expect is a bit of romance.
This story is going to keep you guess, and once you make up your mind, you are probably wrong. Will Claire be able to help Nick and be able to prove his client innocent, or will she be the catalyst to proving her guilty?
A book that constantly had me on my toes, and had my heart in my throat, and the action happens right up to the last page, and yes there is another book to come, but not fast enough.

My Review

The Cherished Quilt is the third book in this series featuring the Fisher sisters, and their loving family, and this is Emily’s story.
Christopher Hochstetler has had a devastating year and barely holding it together when he moves from Ohio to Pennsylvania and begins working for his uncle in his leather business. Thus the meeting of Em and Chris is about to happen, and with easy going Em and Chris fighting his demons, things do not run smoothly.
When Em finds out why he has left his home and family, she is filled with compassion and is determined to help Chris. One of the things she decides to do is make him a quilt, and not an ordinary one, this one is stitched with love, and the fabric once belonged to Em’s grandmother. She decided to make a log cabin design to help connect to Chris, and in the end she has to mail the quilt to him
By putting her heart in the care of Chris is Em heading towards having it broken? Will Chris ever heal and mend the rift with his Dad, even with his father blaming him for his brother?
From beginning to end, I was so into this book that the pages flew and at the end, I wanted more!

I Am A Reader, Not A Writer Presents: The Charming Life of Izzy Malone by Jenny Lundquist Book Blast & Giveaway

The Charming Life of Izzy Malone by Jenny Lundquist

Izzy Malone isn’t your typical sixth grader. She wears camouflage combat boots and tie dye skirts; the Big Dipper and Orion are her two best friends; and she’d rather climb trees or shoot hoops than talk about boys and makeup. And after only a month of middle school she’s already set the record for the most trips to the Principal’s office. The only time Izzy feels at peace is when she’s on the open water, and more than anything else, she wants to become a member of the Dandelion Paddlers, her school’s competitive rowing club. But thanks to those multiple trips to the Principal’s office, Izzy’s parents force her to enroll in Mrs. Whippie’s Charm School, a home-study course in manners and etiquette, or they won’t let her race in Dandelion Hollow's annual pumpkin regatta—where Izzy hopes to prove to the Dandelion Paddlers she is more than qualified to be on their team. When Mrs. Whippie’s first letter arrives it’s way different from what Izzy was expecting. Tucked inside the letter is a shiny gold bracelet and an envelope charm. Izzy must earn her first charm by writing someone a nice note, and once she does more tasks will be assigned. Izzy manages to complete some of the tasks—and to her surprise, she actually finds herself enjoying the course. But when one of her attempts at doing something good is misinterpreted, she fears her chances at passing the course—and becoming a Paddler—are slipping away. With some unexpected friends there to support her, can Izzy manage to earn her charms and stay true to herself?

Praise for the Book: “Izzy’s frank, vulnerable, sassy first-person narration reveals her surprising journey from a solitary girl talking to the stars to a girl with friends to light her way…This story of an atypical girl, her family, and friends, laced with middle school drama, is indeed a charming one.” –Kirkus Reviews “A heartwarming coming-of-age journey…Lundquist deftly portrays the pain of being odd girl out, both at school and at home.” –Publisher’s Weekly add to goodreads new

Excerpt: The bracelet and the first charm appeared the day I punched Austin Jackson in the nose. I didn’t mean to slug him. His face just got in my way. It was a bruising end to a disastrous first month in middle school. You know that kid in class that everyone secretly (and not so secretly) thinks is weird? The one people laugh and point at behind their back, the one who gets picked last in gym class, the one you wish you hadn’t gotten stuck with for a science partner? At Dandelion Hollow Middle School, that kid is me, Izzy Don’t-Call-Me-Isabella Malone. Truthfully, my slide into loserdom started in elementary school and was pretty much an established fact by the time sixth grade started last month. It’s partly because my mouth often has a mind of its own. But I think it’s also because there are a bazillion other things I’d rather do than talk about boys, clothes, and makeup, and I refuse to wear strappy sandals and short skirts. (If you ever catch me wearing strappy sandals or a short skirt, you have my permission to kick my butt.) I do like skirts, though. Really long colorful ones I get from Dandelion Thrift. I like to wear them with my camouflage combat boots. I call the look Camohemian.

The Remnant by Monte Wolverton

The Remnant
In the year 2069 the Apocalypse came and went, but Jesus didn’t show up, as some expected.
Instead, a cataclysmic war, natural disasters and pandemics eradicated 90 percent of earth’s population. Now, in 2131, a totalitarian government rules the world from the majestic, opulent capitol of Carthage, Tunisia. Blamed for igniting the war, religion and religious books are banned. Citizens who will not renounce their religion are sent to work camps.
Grant Cochrin, imprisoned in a bleak petroleum camp in what was once North Dakota, leads his family and friends to escape and embark on a long, dangerous quest for a Christian community. Their resource in this journey? A cherished page torn from the now banished Bible—a remnant of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount handed down from Grant’s grandparents.
What if there were an Apocalypse and Jesus didn’t return? What if the survivors found themselves living in a world ruled by a totalitarian government, where religion is forbidden and all religious texts have been destroyed?
In The Remnant, award-winning author Monte Wolverton tells the tale of a band of concentration camp escapees who trek through the lawless American wilderness on a quest for authentic Christianity, only to come face to face with an unthinkable dilemma. The Remnant is a fast-paced story punctuated with dry satire, memorable characters and hard questions about religious institutions.

My Review

As I was reading the remnant I was hit with the realization that several of the places the group visited, could be a place that people worship today, false prophets, or misleading in the practice of Christianity.
We are way out in history 2131, and all religion has been outlawed, and people with religion are asked to give it up or go into camps. This is what Grant Cochrin and his family experience living in a bleak petroleum plant in North Dakota.
I found myself chuckling at some of the happenings, so serious, and yet some misguided individuals think they are experiencing Christ, by yelling, and other things that I found a bit weird.
My attentions was kept though out this read, and you feel like you want to shake them, and yell that they have the most important part, and yet they receive even more, astonishing, and heart warming.
I felt at the end that maybe there will be another book, and more to come, but doubt they could match the danger this group encountered on their journey.

Praise “Fast paced and full of heart! I gobbled up every word of this book buffet!” –Frank L. Cole Author of The Afterlife Academy "The perfect recipe for edge-of-your-seat action!" --Peggy Eddleman, author of Sky Jumpers

Excerpt:

“The Lost City of El Dorado, the City of Gold,” said Mariah. “Gaucho, I was right all along . . . only, El Dorado was supposed to be hidden in the jungles of South America.” She chuckled weakly. “Only it’s here. In the Himalayas.”
“I told you so,” Zeke mouthed behind Mariah’s back, but he didn’t say it out loud.
Then the breeze shifted, and a cloud passed over the sun for just a moment, transforming the city from glowing gold to gleaming white. The entire city shifted, no longer shining, but appeared as something else entirely.
At the same moment, something sweet on the air touched Guster’s tongue, and he caught a fleeting glimpse of the city for what it truly was, as if a fog had been wiped from his mind. Instead of shining ruby orbs, there were glistening red cherries. Instead of emerald walls, there was deep green mint. And when the sun no longer shone on the towers, they no longer glinted gold, but gleamed as white as pure vanilla.
The city was alive with stories and scents of chocolate, strawberry, mint, butterscotch, and marshmallow.
Gaucho chuckled a little and placed a hand on Guster’s shoulder. “Not El Dorado, my friends,” he said. “The City of Gold is but a myth.”
“This is El Elado, the Delicious City. It is made of the thing that is most precious in all the world. It is the City of Ice Cream.”

My Review

This is the perfect book for me, I am a dog person, and yes I have a cat, but dogs are my guys. From first look the cover of the darling pooch drew me in.
This should be mandatory for everyone who owns a dog, almost like an appliance manual, only more for love. We all have those days that our pet is trying to tell me something, only now we have a handbook to turn to. This book is packed with information, and full of enlightenment, and a place to turn for your questions.
Once you start perusing this one, your going to be looking for more and more answers, and of course, your going to be saying, “I knew that”, or “I didn’t know that”. So much facts packed into a handy sized paper book, full of beautiful pictures, and thoughts for unlocking the canine mind. If anything, I found I have a lot of misinformation, and now I know why things didn’t work.

Excerpt A massive lighthouse sits off the coast of Maine near the town of Cutler. The building has stood empty for over two-hundred years. Those who can make out the edifice view a tower of stone and paned glass unlike any other lighthouse they have ever seen. The specific dimensions are hard to determine as this structure, unlike most lighthouses, is not a single tower. Instead, it has a broader base than usual, with what appear to be turrets at the top. The construction may even consist of two buildings connected at the middle. But not many people question this odd lighthouse, or even wonder why it remains vacant. This is because most Humans can’t actually see the Lighthouse. A few who have a drop of Fey, Were or “Other” blood may perceive an ordinary lighthouse. And some instinct guides these souls to avoid the building, though they wouldn’t be able to voice why if they were asked. True Fey, Were, Vampires, and other supernatural beings can certainly identify the building known to them as the Lighthouse, but none of them dare try to enter. Those genuine descendants know the Way is blocked, and has been for the two-hundred years the Lighthouse has stood dark. The place has sat empty since the most recent Lighthouse Guardian died one horrible night at thepinnacle. The Guardian had only been Guardian for four-hundred years and was killed well before his time. Inside the Lighthouse lies the only permanent causeway (the “Way”) between the worlds of magic and the world of the mundane. Fey, Were, Vampires and other non-Humans, despite the barrier to journeying across from inside the Lighthouse, could still travel between these two worlds using costly magic spells—but such a trip is difficult and dangerous. The entrance to the Way closed at the time of the Guardian’s death, and neither magic nor mundane had been able to open it since. On one late evening in particular, a large man sat under a tree just outside of Cutler, eating the stew his mate had made earlier and placed in a storage dish. The season was early fall, but already the nights had a bite to them. The man was on his third shift of watch duty in a row. He had pulled this job ten months previously and was glad the rotations were only a year long. He would be back home in Louisiana before the truly bitter winter was well underway. The man was suddenly blinded by a light coming from the very top of the Lighthouse. The man’s reflexes were frighteningly quick, but even so he dropped his stew. Flabbergasted, he stared directly at the light for a full twenty seconds, until he no longer cared about the meal. He turned away from the brightness, and shedding his clothes, he found his legs shortening and his arms lengthening. In less than a minute, a large dark-grey Wolf shook himself once, then again. Glancing back for a final look at the Lighthouse, the Wolf began running toward the town. He wouldn’t stop running until he was at his pack leader’s house. From there, word would spread like a virus. Everything was different now. For somewhere in this ordinary domain, two minutes before, a brand-new Guardian had been born.

Emotions can become so intense and overwhelming that you will feel pulled undertow by the sheer weight of them. Sadness covers you, fear tracks your every step, frustration pushes against you, stress seems to smother you. You feel surrounded, backed into a corner. Your fight or flight response kicks in like wounded prey. No matter that nothing appears to have changed, or maybe BECAUSE NOTHING seems to have changed. Whatever the impetus, you feel the rhythm of your heart uptick as you paddle against the waves of hopelessness. Desperate to seek an intravenous injection of hope. You turn your head away from the world, and you go chasing after that feeling of relief, assuredness, security. Desperate to find respite from the noise of everyday life.
