A Colebridge Quilted Christmas by Ann Hazelwood
The final installment of Ann Hazelwood's Colebridge Community Series reveals Christmas in Colebridge. Main street is busy with the Mistletoe Market and the quilt show in the depot. Folks in Colebridge help one another, especially at Christmas. Like the quilts, they are sewn together through love and loss. Their lives are quilted together by their appreciation of the community that binds them, not just in Colebridge but in their hearts.
About The Author
Ann Hazelwood is a former 30 yr. Quilt Shop owner from St. Charles, Missouri. She has written a series of Missouri travel books and small gift books for AQS, such as “100 Things You Need to Know if You Own a Quilt” and “100 Treats for Quilters.”
Ann is an AQS Certified Quilt Appraiser and former President of the National Quilt Museum. She lectures on quilt related topics and has exhibited her red and white quilt collection in the National Quilt Museum. She is also the textile appraiser for the Antique Road Show, when in the St. Louis region.
When AQS started publishing fiction, Ann was the first to publish. Her Colebridge Series includes “The Basement Quilt,” “The Potting Shed Quilt,” “The Funeral Parlor Quilt,” “The Jane Austen Quilt Club,” “The Ghostly Quilts on Main, Quilted Lilies,” and “A Colebridge Quilted Christmas.” These titles are also available on e-book and audio.
Ann’s new fiction series takes place in the rolling hills of East Perry County, Missouri, her home town territory. “The Forgiving Quilt” is the first in the series and will make its debut in January of 2016.

My Review
This book is the eighth and final novel in this series, and I was given the opportunity to review this book, I now am looking forward to reading the entire series. So yes this can be read alone, and enough information is included to carry you through, so you know what is going on.
When this book opens we are very much into the Christmas Season in Colebridge, and Anne is busy everywhere, so much on her plate, you want to tell her to breath. Little Sammy is about to enjoy his first Christmas, and be the center of everyone’s world.
As I turned the pages of this book I became so absorbed in Anne’s world, and put myself in her shoes, and I will tell you once you pick it up, you can’t put it down, it is so compelling a read.
Where Anne has a lot of problems, and grief being the main one, she seems to be constantly thinking of others. The Christmas spirit abounds in this story, and wait until you see the Christmas Market, it is described so well, felt I was there.
What a gift Ann Hazelwood has to bring the written word alive, while this was my first book by here, it will not be my last.
I received this book from the Publisher American Quilter’s Society, and was not required to give a positive review.

In the most turbulent decade of our nation’s history, four Southern women—destinies forged by birth, hearts steeled by war—face near impossible choices on their journeys in life . . . and in love.
A Heart So True by Dorothy LoveAbigail knows all too well what is expected of her: to marry her distant cousin Charles and take her place in society. But her heart belongs to another. A terrible incident forces Abby to choose between love and duty.
My Review: This story is set in pre-Civil War times, 1860, and yes there is war talk and with her father hoping to run for Governor of NC, Abigail has to be on her best behavior. Of course, we know all things cannot run smooth, and with her heart on the line what can she do?
To Mend a Dream by Tamera Alexander
Savannah Darby would do almost anything to revisit her family home. So when new owner, Aidan Bedford, a Boston attorney and former Union soldier, seeks to redecorate the house for his fiancée, Savannah jumps at the opportunity. But the clock is ticking. Can she find the box her father supposedly hid there during the war before her assignment is completed? And before she sees yet another battle lost on the home front. This time, one of the hearts.
My Review: Tamera Alexander’s story is set just after the Civil War has ended, and Savannah Darby’s family has lost everything. Savannah lost both of her brothers and her father to war, and her mother to illness. She now has the car of her two younger siblings, and is earning a living as a master seamstress, and she ends up at her old family home to make drapes and pillows, etc. She is also looking for a box that her father had hidden.
Will she be able to work in her old home holding so many memories? Will she be able to help her family by figuring out where that box is? Or will something very unexpected happen?
Love Beyond Limits by Elizabeth Musser
Emily has a secret: She's in love with one of the freedmen on her family's plantation. Meanwhile, another man declares his love for her. Emily realizes some things are not as they seem and secrets must be kept in order to keep those she loves safe.
Emily has a secret: She's in love with one of the freedmen on her family's plantation. Meanwhile, another man declares his love for her. Emily realizes some things are not as they seem and secrets must be kept in order to keep those she loves safe.
My Review: Abigail’s heart
belongs to her family’s former slaves, in more way than one. She has
taken it upon herself to teach them to read at the new school. We are in
a period after the Civil War, and people of color have been granted the
right to vote. The Klan is making their feelings know by murdering and
burning, such a sad time in our history.
Abigail has her
heart torn by two men in her life, one is beyond reach, and the other
may be responsible for some of the terrible deeds that are happening in
the area. This one will keep you thinking long after you turn the final
page.
An Outlaw's Heart by Shelley Gray
When Russell Stark returns to Fort Worth, he's determined to begin a new life. But when he arrives at his mother's homestead, he discovers she's very ill, and the woman he loved is still as beautiful and sweet as he remembered. With time running out, Russell must come to terms with both his future and his past.
My Review: Hard lesson are learned in this novella, a mother’s fear and not protecting her son, and woman who feels she has lost her true love. Decisions that have been made and actions that happened, and now forgiveness, and the hardest of all forgiving yourself, as you forgive those who have hurt you. When the man you have always loved has hurt you, you become prey for charlatans.
All of the Novella’s are set around the 1860’s and the Civil War, and can be read in a single sitting, but they are so good you can’t stop at one. Enjoy!

Orphan #8 by Kim van Alkemade
A stunning debut novel of historical fiction set in the forgotten world of New York City's Jewish orphanages
In 1919, four-year-old Rachel Rabinowitz is placed in the Hebrew Infant Home where Dr. Mildred Solomon is conducting medical research on the children. Dr. Solomon subjects Rachel to an experimental course of X-ray treatments that establish the doctor's reputation while risking the little girl's health. Now it's 1954, and Rachel is a nurse in the hospice wing of the Old Hebrews Home when elderly Dr. Solomon becomes her patient. Realizing the power she holds over the helpless doctor, Rachel embarks on a dangerous experiment of her own design. Before the night shift ends, Rachel will be forced to choose between forgiveness and revenge.
Inspired by true events, Orphan #8 is a powerful novel about the human capacity to harm—and to love.
About The Author
Kim van Alkemade was born in New York City and spent her childhood in suburban New Jersey. Her late father, an immigrant from the Netherlands, met her mother, a descendant of Eastern European Jewish immigrants, in the Empire State Building. She attended college in Wisconsin, earning a doctorate in English from UW-Milwaukee. She is a professor at Shippensburg University where she teaches writing, and lives in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Her creative nonfiction essays have been published in literary journals including Alaska Quarterly Review, So To Speak, and CutBank. Orphan # 8 is her first novel.

My Review
Orphan Number Eight is actually Rachael Rabinowitz’s story from beginning to the last page. We follow her from the age of four until she is facing a life threatening force, and you will empathize and feel for her all the way through, no mater if she is doing right or wrong.
Rachael is living with her family, her mother, father and brother in a tenement on New York’s lower east side. When tragedy strikes, this little girl’s world is turned up side down, and will never be the same. Rachael and Sam are sent to the Hebrew’s Orphanage Home, and her life takes a terrible turn.
We are with Rachel as she suffers from one injustice to another, and want to help, but the fact that this story is fiction, but based on fact, does not make it any better. To think that a Doctor could get away with giving numbers to children rather than names, hence number eight. It is brought out in the story, but I couldn’t help thinking that this place wasn’t much better than Hitler’s Nazi’s.
I couldn’t put this book down, once I turned the first page I had to read it to the end and it was less than a day, that I turned the final page. I wanted more, yes, but I wanted peace for Rachael.
I recommend this read as an eye opener; life can be very tough, especially for vulnerable children.

Book Excerpt:
Carson Chance was deep in thought when he
first saw her. At first he thought it was a mirage or maybe his imagination,
but as he got closer and slowed his Harley Davidson to a stop on the side of
Highway 80, just in front of her; there was no question it was his lucky day.
He stared at her as the wind blew her long auburn hair into her eyes. She
swished it out of her face and it fell back around her shoulders as she smiled
up at him. Mesmerized by her beautiful brown eyes, he quickly came back to
reality and turned off the engine on his bike. Putting the kick stand down, he
got off his bike, removed his helmet and took off his riding gloves. “Are you
looking for a ride to Dallas?” he asked.
“Would I be out here on the side of the
road with my arm extended out if I weren’t?”
Carson laughed. “I suppose not. Hop on.”
“I’m Amy.”
“Carson.”
“What’s your first name?” Amy demanded.
“That is my first name. Carson, Carson
Chance,”
“Like Johnny Carson?”
“Yeah, I guess except Carson is my first
name.” Carson was fascinated by Amy’s low, sexy voice and hoped he would get a
chance to have a real conversation with her before they got to Dallas.
The Harley was now cruising down Highway
80 at sixty miles an hour making it difficult to hear. Since Carson relied on
both his weak hearing and lip reading, he decided he would pull off around
Terrell, Texas, and get something to drink. He’d made the trip back to the VA
Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana, several times on his bike and knew there was
a Dairy Queen drive-in a quarter mile off the highway so he turned off and
pulled in. “Duty calls,” he said. They both got off the bike and she pulled off
her helmet, shaking her hair out. Carson thought it was the sexist thing he’d
ever seen, and took a closer look at her. She had deep-set brown eyes, luscious
thick pink lips and her skin was flawless. Her silhouette was perfect with all
the curves in the right places and she had a small waist and tight slim hips.
Carson was quite a prize himself. He was
just over six feet tall, lifted weights and limited his drinking so his abs
were tight and Amy thought he had a really cute butt. He had brown semi-curly
hair that was combed back over his ears and a dimple in the right corner of his
mouth when he smiled. His lean bronze face was well offset by his fiery, hazel
eyes which had the faculty of seeing things as though he had a wide-angle lens.
Preferring variety, picking up girls came easy for him, and he had no intentions
of ever getting married.
They
entered the Dairy Queen, ordered some food at the counter, and Carson extracted
his wallet from his back pocket and paid for it. When he returned from the
men’s room, he walked over taking the bench across from her. Amy put five
dollars on the table in front of him. “I don’t expect you to pay my way. Carson
shrugged his shoulders and picked up the cash. The restaurant was almost empty,
so the waitress brought their food to their table instead of calling out their
number. Amy got up to go wash her hands, and Carson waited for her to return
before he picked up his hamburger. “You didn’t have to wait on me,” she said,
taking a seat on the bench across from him.
“Are
you always this bossy?”
Amy
studied him for a minute and then picked up a french fry stuffing it into her
mouth.
“Look,
my bike got stolen and when I called the police, they treated me like a piece
of trash. They didn’t want to believe me. The last guy that gave me a ride
thought I was a prostitute and offered to pay me ten dollars for a blow job.
I’m tired of taking crap off of men and the reason why I gave you money for my
burger was because I didn’t want you to think I owed you something.”
“All
right, I’m not the enemy here. You put yourself out there and I simply offered
you a ride, nothing else.”
“Look,
you seem like a nice guy and I’m sorry to take my frustrations out on you. The
truth is I’m from Austin, Texas, and I dropped out of school. I went to Monroe,
Louisiana, with a friend and then he met up with an old high school sweetheart
and kicked me out. I should have known he was a looser. I don’t have much luck
with men. They seem to always take advantage of me and I’m sick of it.”
Carson
continued eating and took a sip of his root beer. “Why were you on your way to
Dallas and not Austin?”
“My
dad told me if I dropped out of school not to bother coming back home and I
know he means it. He’s really strict and this isn’t the first time I’ve skipped
out on school.
Carson
was surprised by her comment, thinking she looked older. “What are your plans
when you get to Dallas?” Carson asked.
“I
don’t know. Try and get a job maybe. I have a couple of girlfriends that moved
there after school was out last summer and I could look them up. I’ll figure
something out. I always do. Enough about me. What do you do?” she asked looking
at his finger for a wedding ring.
“I’m
a private investigator.” He sat back in the booth and looked out the window.
“No way. Were you on a job in Louisiana?”
“No,
I have to go to the VA Hospital for a check-up every so often and I was headed
home.”
“VA
Hospital? Were you in the military?”
“Army
until I got injured in Vietnam.”
“Oh,
I’m so sorry. I feel bad that I was so rude to you at first.”
Carson laughed.
“You
and I have a lot in common,” he said. “Edgy on the outside but we have a few
soft spots on the inside.” Amy laughed and Carson was amused by her sexy laugh.
It was more like a rumble in her throat and her smile was contagious.
“Edgy?
I’ve been called a lot of things, but edgy isn’t one of them.” The tension was
finally gone and they were beginning to have a real conversation. Amy was
animated when she spoke and used her hands in the conversation. Her nails were
long with clear polish and Carson tried hard to find something he didn’t like
about her. He found it difficult to take his eyes off her.
Carson looked at his watch. “It’s going to
be dark in an hour and it’s difficult to see cyclists riding on the highway at
night. Best we get on with it. Where do you want me to take you?”
Amy sighed and bit her lower lip. “Do you
know if there is a cheap motel close to where you live? I don’t want to put you
out. I took some money out of my friend’s wallet before I left.”
Carson couldn’t help but feel sorry for
her. It would be late when they got to Dallas and a cheap motel wouldn’t be
safe. He hesitated before he said, “Look, I was in a bad situation once myself
and a good friend helped me out. I live in a two bedroom house but I only have
one bed. You can have it tonight and I’ll sleep on the couch.” Carson took out
his identification card and showed her his PI license. “Just so you know I’m
legit.”
Amy looked at it and smiled. “Actually I
didn’t think you were making it up, but thanks for showing me.”
“I’m curious,” Carson said. “Just how old
are you?”
Amy let out a big sigh. “Eighteen.” He
noticed she looked down not wanting to make eye contact.
Carson stood up and put a dollar tip on
the table. “We better get going.”
When they took off, Amy tightened her arms
around Carson’s waist and hugged his back side laying her chin on his shoulder.
Carson was twenty-four years old and even though he found her utterly
fascinating and extremely sexy, he knew he was too old for her. He preferred
woman closer to his own age, since most girls younger than twenty-one needed
too much pampering, and had too many insecurities. Amy seemed different though,
and if she had any insecurities, she certainly hid them well. He was smitten
with her sharp confidence and she was smart beyond her years.
Amy had hardly moved while they made their
way back to Dallas. He called her name twice, and when she didn’t answer he
assumed she had fallen asleep. When he pulled up in his driveway, he took each
one of her hands into his and slowly swivelled around. She nuzzled her head
under his neck and he could hear her easy breathing. “Amy, wake up, we’re
here.” Amy raised her head up and looked around.
“Where are we?” she said yawning.
“Home. I need to get off and open the
garage door. Are you awake?”
She yawned again, “I guess so,” Carson
couldn’t help but smile at her.
My Thoughts
Carson Chance is having a rough time since his return from active duty to Vietnam. He suffers flashback, and although he works full time as a private investigator, he tries to be alone at night, as he never knows what is going to happen when he has a flash back.
A chance meeting with Amy Warren and his life is changed forever; she is an underage runaway with dark secrets and ends up wanted by the police.
What a wild tangled web this story weaves, from family murder, to Mafia kidnapping and murder, to a turbulent love affair. While wondering if anyone is going to survive what fate has in store for them, you also wonder if they will ever be able to find contentment in life.

My Review
Made with love is a very appropriate title for this book, everyone in the family seems to do something or more because they love.
This story focuses on the oldest daughter in the family named Lovenia, or called Love by her family, and sisters Faith, Hope and Joy. Sweet huh? Lovenia’s dream for years now has been to open a pie shop, she has saved her money long before her family moved and resettles in Pinecraft Florida. She has collected recipes and pictures out of magazines, it is her hearts desire, and she feels God pointing her and his placing the right building and people in her life, at the right time. There is even a young carpenter who just happens to be at the building when she is looking at it, he grabs her ideas and begins helping her fulfill her dreams.
Soon you have a feeling that Noah, the carpenter, has his eyes on Lovenia, and you will love how he grasps her dream, in so many ways to help make it happen. He is also holding on to secrets that have haunted him for years. Will these two be able to form a relationship; will past actions spoil things for them? Will the pie shop finally open and become a reality?
I for one wanted to be in the shop and help and live among these people, you won’t regret picking this one up.
PS You will be copying and saving delicious recipes here, can’t wait to try them.

By day, Becky Monson is a mother to three young children, and a wife. By night, she escapes with reading books and writing. In her debut novel, Becky uses humor and true-life experiences to bring her characters to life. She loves all things chick-lit (movies, books, etc.), and wishes she had a British accent. She has recently given up Diet Coke for the fiftieth time and is hopeful this time will last... but it probably won't.
Excerpt
“Do you remember the time you got us
kicked out of the library?” I ask, changing the subject away from that
obnoxious dirndl.
Ian throws his head back, laughing.
“Oh wow, yeah I remember. And it wasn’t me who got us kicked out, it was you.”
He gives me a snide look.
“What? No way. It was totally you.”
I eye him, not sure I’m right. Did I get us kicked out?
“Yeah, it was me,” he says, smiling
slyly. “Well, it was mostly me,” he adds with a wink.
“How dare you use my poor memory
against me.” I feign disgust. Ian laughs loudly.
My gosh, it feels good to hear him
genuinely laugh. Adam is not a laugher. Not a boisterous one, at least. He mostly
just nods his head and smiles.
Besides the laughing, there are a
lot of things I’ve missed about Ian that I hadn’t realized. How he is so
methodical about everything. Even sushi. He has a method to it. He mixes just
enough wasabi in his soy sauce, and he always tops each piece with a slice of
ginger. I also forgot what a gentleman he is. Opening the door for me when we
walked into the restaurant, pulling my seat back for me at the table. I want to
say Adam did those things at first, but now I can’t remember if he ever did
them at all. It was never a big deal to me. I don’t need those things. I’m a
big girl. I can take care of myself. It’s a nice gesture though, isn’t it? I
guess I’d forgotten.
He’s also so complimentary. He even
mentioned my Russian Red lips. Well, he didn’t know the brand, but he noticed
the red and said he liked it. I have to admit, it’s been pretty freeing to be
able to wear lipstick again, without getting a scoff from Adam.

Wanda’s fascination with the Amish culture developed when she met her husband, Richard, who grew up in a Mennonite church, and whose family has a Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Meeting her new Mennonite sister-in-laws caused Wanda to yearn for the simpler life. In their travels, she and her husband have become close friends with many Amish people across America. Wanda’s desire to explore their culture increased when she discovered that her great-great grandparents were part of the Anabaptist faith.
My Review
The Gift is the second book in this series at Arthur IL Amish Community, and reunite with our old friends, and especially the bond of friends Leah, Priscilla and Elaine. We ended the first book on a cliff- hanger and expect the same with this read.
We get caught up with all of our friends and begin new relationships, with the focus on our friends and their trip to matrimony. There are some real chuckles here, and some very sad happenings.
With the introduction of the Englisher from Chicago into the story, my mind was trying to figure out how she fit, and yes I did guess it. We all make some choices that we regret later, and this story has several story points of this nature, and we get an in-depth look into their lives.
When the story ended Adam seemed to be on the road towards forgiveness, he has a lot of bitterness left, and we can only home he finds peace. I am looking forward to the next book and answers to the many facets of the lives in this small community.
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Barbour, Inc., and was not required to give a positive review.
