About The Author


Mary Ellis grew up close to the eastern Ohio Amish community, Geauga County, where her parents often took her to farmer's markets and woodworking fairs. She loved their peaceful, agrarian lifestyle, their respect for the land, and their strong sense of Christian community.
She and her husband now live close to the largest population of Amish in the country--a four-county area in central Ohio. They often take weekend trips to purchase produce, meet Amish families, and enjoy a simpler way of life.
Mary enjoys reading, traveling, gardening, bicycling and swimming. But her favorite past-time is snorkeling, which she seldom gets to do living in Ohio. She is a former middle school teacher and a former saleswoman for the world's best chocolate company. Now she writes full-time and wonders why her house is still dusty and her garden has so many weeds.




My Review:

The Lady and The Officer, takes place during the Civil War, a war that tore our Country apart. This is Madeline Howards story, and a remarkable woman she was, loosing her new husband to the war, then loosing her home, and livelihood, she embarks across enemy lines to stay with the only family she has remaining, in the Capital of the Confederacy, Richmond Va.
With her loyalties lying with the North she is now living with her Aunt and Uncle and Cousin in the South. Not only that, but her Uncle works directly with Jefferson Davis, President of The Confederacy. Before she left the North she had an encounter with a Union General, James Dowling, and now she is in the South with Col Elliot Haywood, the only patient, her one-day of nursing, she saved.
Now there are two men who are vying for her, and it takes until the end of the book to find out whom God has chosen for her. I loved seeing how these people lived during this tough time, Madeline’s family are rather well off, but times and circumstances of the War sure change things. With all the death, and hardships that War brings, we watch these people dig in and give to those who are less fortunate. There are also tidbits of real facts about what is going on at this time, such a black mark on our beloved Country.
We of course, living way in the future from this time, know what happens, and who wins, but in a way everyone was a looser. I felt the only way any of them survived was because of their great faith in God, no mater which church they worshiped in.
Journey with Madeline on this historic visit and decisions that alter all of their lives, you will be glad you picked up this book.

My Review: 

Once burned twice shy sure applies to this story, and in particular to Ethan Gingerich, and his outlook on taking a wife. In away it also applies to shy and horribly abused Clara Barkman, no child should have to live under the conditions that she and her sisters endured.
Now things have changed and God has answered her prayers, they are living a happy life with her Grandfather. Each of the girls is moving on with their lives and one is on track to be married soon. Clara has set her hopes of becoming the new teacher at the local Amish school, and is one of four candidates for the job.
In a horrible turn of events Ethan is now the Uncle/Father to his brothers three children, when their parents are tragically killed. See how he takes care of these children and being a bachelor and his logging job. One can guess with the title of the book, but you will never see what happens here and how these children act. Some of their antics will shock you, and others will have you really laughing, but don’t miss this sweet read.
I really enjoyed this fast paced Amish read, and it brought to light that all cultures have some hidden dealings that no one wants to know about, swept under the rug, and hard to bring out in the open.

About The Author

Kristy Cambron has been fascinated with the WWII era since hearing her grandfather's stories of the war. My Review:

Everyone should read this book, a fictional, but true story. The horrors of Hitler’s world, and the acceptance by many that willingly followed him, like lemmings going off a cliff. We put faces to these people, although they really could have a thousand different ones.
A memory of a painting observed by an eight-year-old girl, becomes a life passion, and we become witnesses to how it came to be. Add in a family in possession of a copy of this same painting, thought to be the original, and we have a basis of the story.
Sera James owns a Manhattan Art Gallery, and has a passion to find this picture she only glimpsed once. When her assistant finds it, or think she does, Sera heads to California and meets William Hanover III. So begins a chance romance, but it is not the main romance, there is another in this story. One that has to do with the Vienna’s Philharmonic, and the lives of compassionate and gifted performers who with God’s help eyes are opened to what is going on in their country. Vladimir and Adele are the Austrian side of this story, and what they do that lands them in Auschwitz.
We change to different time periods in this book, and you keep hoping while knowing all the while what is about to happen. Hoping you are wrong, but the time was too horrible, that even the German’s tried to destroy all of the evidence. I so enjoyed this book, and even wanted more, not to be in the prison camp, but to see the three blinks of eyelids.
You won’t go wrong with this one, and it will keep you up trying to get to the end to find a conclusion, will anyone survive? Everyone’s life is about to be changed! I gave this book the top five stars, but it is worth much more!

First Impressions: An Amish Tale of Pride and Prejudice by Sarah Price

About The Author

There is something magical about getting a second chance in life to learn, live, and love. I think that best describes who I am as a person, a friend, a mother, and a wife.
I have been writing ever since I learned how to hold a pencil.  As a child, I wrote a story about a family of gnomes, painstakingly handwriting each story in a blue covered journal.  When I was older, I learned how to type on an electric typewriter, spending my summers and weekends plucking at the keys until the early morning hours, much to my older sister’s chagrin.
Most of my stories focused around cultures, learning about different societies within our own.  I wrote about homeless people, gypsies, the circus, and the Amish.  It was natural that I focused on the Amish.  I was raised by a family with a rich history in Pennsylvania.  In the early 1700′s, my ancestors came over from Europe and settled in an area that grew into one of the largest Anabaptist communities in the nation. I loved diving into these cultures, studying the people and the environment in order to write about the people who lived among them.  I traveled a lot, a careful blend of Europe, South America, and the Caribbean.  When I traveled, I would escape the tourist track and immerse myself in local haunts, observing the people and writing in my journals.
Unfortunately, life happens and, during the struggles of my first marriage, the fiction writing tapered to a trickle.  But we learn from obstacles and difficulties, often finding new pieces of ourselves that we didn’t even know existed.  The good news is that once you are a writer, you are always a writer.
When I settled into my new life with my second husband, I dusted off the manuscripts and returned to the screen.  Luckily, my husband has been very supportive and helps with brainstorming, writing, and editing.  He had been crucial to the success of my publishing these works.
I have advanced degrees in Marketing, Communication, and (soon) a PhD in Leadership. I use the name Sarah Price as an honor to my grandmother and my family, the Priess family, who came over to America in the very early 1700s aboard an old sailing vessel called the Patience.
In addition, I am beginning to speak out about my battle with breast cancer (http://www.pinkumbrellas.org) and my own experiences with domestic violence and being bullied, specifically with horrendous cyberbullying conducted against me and several of my friends and family by another author.

My Review:

Read in July, 2014

I loved First Impressions, and am very guilty of this sin, and have regretted it a number of times. I have told others that I am quick to judge, and then silently regret my impression, and was told I am not alone.
Yes this story is about the decision to judge, and very quickly at that, which I guess I do too. The first time you meet someone, and ah how wrong you can be, and that is exactly what Elizabeth “Lizzie” Blank does when Frederick Detweiler comes to Lancaster Amish Community. Lizzie’s Mother has five daughters and is anxious to have them married of, what a desire for a mother. She doesn’t seem to care who they marry, of course they must be Amish, but age, looks, and jobs have nothing to do with it. Thank goodness her Dad is a smart and wonderful man, and in this patriarchal society is the final word.
This is a very interesting story and you never see where help is coming from, and was thoroughly surprised. You will love this book, it keeps you hopping and your heart will break and heal. The story is based on the original Pride and Prejudice, and now that is in my to be read pile, TBR. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did, and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
