Acorn.

Voting is an important civil right, and many argue it is a civic duty. In Australia you must vote. In Belgium you must show up at the polls, but having shown up, you do not have to vote. Over twenty countries have some form of mandatory voting.

Acorn was an organization devoted to adding voters to the rolls. Acorn often paid homeless people to collect signatures. Thus, it was providing a double public service.

So while on occasion such workers did try and rip off Acorn (using fake signatures to invent nonexistent people) for a few extra dollars, the Acorn organization never created any voter fraud. This may come as a shock to the paranoid conservative brain, but the fact is that nonexistent people cannot vote, not of course unless Jesus decides to rise from the dead (for a second time) in order to vote. Ironically, if one understands anything about Jesus, his likely abhorrence of the Stupidparty and their antics, this must surely be a very tempting option. But like Kerry, Acorn was swiftboated by the Benefactors, i.e., Big Money devoted to an insidious and widespread deception. Big Money wins; the public and its treasured democracy lose. Even after Acorn was hounded out of business, 49% of Stupidparty voters believed that Acorn stole the 2012 election. 

About The Author

Patrick Andendall has always had an interest in politics and, being multicultural, he views issues from a more international perspective. In 2004, five days before the election, he flew to Cleveland and pitched in to help with the political process. What he discovered was the dissolution of the American Dream, which he writes about in his book, Stupidparty.

Educated at English boarding schools from the age of seven, Andendall went on to graduate from Lancing College. He started by sometimes working three jobs at once, trainee Underwriter/claim broker at Lloyd's of London, his own one man cleaning Company (cleaning the very offices of a Reinsurance Company he would transact business at) plus doing seasonal work on various farms.

Having made some windfall profits by borrowing money in order to be a "Stag" to take advantage of opportunities created by Margaret Thatcher's de nationalization policies of the mid 1980's, Andendall evolved into an entrepreneur with a core specialty in Reinsurance in London and New York where he looks for patterns in numbers. Self-employed in a field not normally conducive to self-employment, he is able remain in control, juggle different jobs, travel and pursue his various interests.

Ending up in New York via romance in the African bush, Andendall now lives on Long Island with his wife, two children and two dogs.

Morena’s new iPhone double-buzzed on the bathroom counter, perilously close to the washbasin.

“I didn’t know you’d decided to use this one exclusively,” Suzyn said, hoping Morena would donate the older Samsung to her. Unfortunately for Suzyn, that would never happen. Not only did Morena prefer her familiar old phone for work purposes, but she hadn’t actually noticed she’d transitioned to the new iPhone.

The iPhone was just so handy. Somehow, it was always there, as though it were tethered to Morena’s subconscious. Why, it was almost like it had followed her to the bathroom.

Morena shrugged and thumbed the unlock with her left hand while her right fished for the liquid eyeliner she knew was somewhere in her makeup kit. Why was it that the thing she wanted always shifted to the bottom? “I’m just gonna check Mãe’s location...”

There might have been an end to that sentence, but she was distracted by the hunt for the all-important eyeliner.

...and by the bright green heart that filled the screen. That was not the regular dashboard, nor was it the friend-finding app.

Suzyn giggled and knocked their elbows together over the laminate counter showing water stains from the ’80s, ’90s, and today. “If you can’t handle an iPhone, maybe you should just give your oversized thumbs a rest.”

Based in an Amish setting, my Emma follows the same trials and tribulations of Jane Austen’s Emma. She thinks a little too highly of herself and those around her. She is quite happy to express her opinions, often when she shouldn’t. Personally, I love Emma as a character because she is so real. Let’s face it…she’s flawed. Aren’t we all? But her flaws get her into a few situations that will make the reader chuckle. That’s the best part of retelling Jane Austen’s novels: She had the greatest characters!

Many of my regular readers tend to stick to just the Amish genre. I often hear that it’s because they are clean and godly. However, so are the classics.

I know that reading classic literature—such as Jane Austen, the Bronte Sisters, Charles Dickens, and Victor Hugo, to name a few—can be a daunting task. Many of us were forced to read one of these authors’ books in English class during our high school years. As adults, many of us prefer lighter reads to balance our stressful lives as we juggle home, family, and work. Picking up a classic book might not be at the top of our TBR pile.

Yet, there is something intellectually stimulating about the classics that is missing in many of these lighter reads. Jane Austen is one of my favorite authors. Her writing style is brilliant, her attention to detail is amazing, and her character development is second to none. So I decided to challenge myself and retell Jane Austin’s book in an Amish setting, combining the Amish culture and religion with a Jane Austen style of writing and story-telling.

A lot of people loved First Impressions, the first book in this series. I suspect that they will also love Emma since she is not the quintessential female character in an Amish book. But she is real…perfect only in the fact that she is flawed and, most likely, quite similar to people we encounter in our daily lives. Perhaps even a little bit like ourselves.  ;-)

 My Review

This newest book by Sarah Price is so good; I couldn’t put it down, and kept reading. The focus of this is on Emma Weaver, and right from the start I felt myself being she, I literally walked in her shoes.
At first when I met Emma, and she pointed out to a friend some bad points about another person, I was a bit disappointed, and then realized that I might not say anything, but my mind would have the same thoughts. I also find that I am at times judgmental, and often find myself wrong. So Emma and I have a lot of the same traits, no wonder I thought she was a snob!
Emma is also very considerate and caring, she has made a home for her Dad and really takes great care of him. She is also looking out for her elderly neighbors, and often times her visit to them when she knows that their primary caretaker is not home.
There are some very funny happenings here, and I’m sure that you will find a good chuckle, she plays matchmaker, and things don’t seem, on each occasion, to turn out like she planned. Was a bit surprised that one of the characters was able to put together a new match very fast, and was married to another in record time.
We also meet Gideon King, her sister’s husband’s older brother, and he is a dear family friend. Gideon and her Dad seem to spend a lot of time together, and have formed a wonderful friendship. Gideon also seems to be the one who can put Emma in her place, and she does realize how wrong she has been.
Emma has vowed to never marry, she will continue to take care of her Dad, can one of these suitors she has picked out for her friend actually be the one God has chosen for her. We see her in action as she puts men in their place, and out spoken Amish woman.
Come along and enjoy this unusual matchmaking story, Emma’s record doesn’t seem to be very good, but oh how I loved this page-turning read. Enjoy!

About The Author

Adina Senft grew up in a plain house church, where she was often asked by outsiders if she was Amish (the answer was no), she made her own clothes, and she perfected the art of the French braid. She holds an M.F.A. in Writing Popular Fiction from Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania, where she teaches as adjunct faculty.
Writing as Shelley Bates, she was the winner of RWA’s RITA Award for Best Inspirational Novel in 2005, a finalist for that award in 2006, and, writing as Shelley Adina, was a Christy Award finalist in 2009. My Review

Keys of Heaven is part of the Healing Grace series, and although you should read the others, which are equally enjoyable, you can read this one alone. I felt right after I turned the first page that I was walking into an Amish Soap Opera, I could see it playing out before me.
I loved how families rallied around those in need, and how Sarah is now learning to make a living using what God has provided. She is a Dokterfraa in training using the plants that mostly grow wild for the taking. Made me think that this is where we all need to be heading, and have actually used the elderberry berries to make cough syrup.
We also have a bit of Amish matchmaking, and there are some repercussions that happen here, one going one way, while the other is heading in another direction. Signals sure get crossed, and yet maybe not.
Sarah is also guilty of being judgmental, and we all are guilty of this, hers tends a bit more toward meddling. Will she end up doing more damage that good? Will she be able to find forgiveness, and most important forgive herself.
We also have a side story of an angry teen that defies his parents and ends up in the middle of the Amish. Will he end up learning from this experience, or will his parents punish him? What about Sarah and Henry, or Henry and Ginny? I can’t wait for another book in this series, and I hope for more answers. Enjoy!

My Review  

The setting for Remember The Lilies is in the Philippines and we are in an internment camp, a University Campus, run by the Japanese who have control of the Island. The story seems to start around the beginning of the internment, at the beginning of WWII, when life was rough, but much different than I was expecting.
Irene and her Aunt Anita were rather poor missionaries when then are sent to the camp along with the people they were visiting with on that fateful Christmas. They have rather rough huts and very few possessions, but they are surviving. There is another part of the camp, which rather surprised me, where people with money at the time they were sent here have nicer huts and more possessions, and are doing a bit better with more food. This is where Rand, a womanizing former club owner resides.
We experience the brutality of war and the daily trials of trying to survive; through all of this Irene and her Aunt have God to lean their trials on. This verse appears several times in the book, “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these” Luke 12:27.
There is an attraction between Irene and Rand, she is lovely, but definitely not his type, or is she? He also has his hidden secrets and has lived on the wild side, and we go deep into his life and who was there for him as a child.
There is evil lurking in the camp and not always in the form of the Japanese, and this individual, never saw all that was coming, blew me away. There are several twists and turns in the story, and some of the happening I was so surprised with. What a great book, and I definitely want more by this author, a captivating page-turner.

Amy Clipston is a native of New Jersey, I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I often joke that my fiction writing “career” began in elementary school as I wrote and shared silly stories with a close friend. However throughout school, I only considered writing a hobby, and I never dreamt of being an author.
In 1991, I graduated from high school, and my parents and I moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia. My father retired, and my mother went to work full-time. I attended Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, and I graduated with a degree in communications. I met my husband, Joe, during my senior year in college, a few days after my father had a massive stroke. Joe and I clicked instantly, and after a couple of months we started dating. We married four years later.
After graduating from VWC, I took a summer job with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, which turned into an eleven-year career. I worked in the Public Affairs Office for four years and then moved into Planning as a writer/editor.
During that time, I continued writing for fun. It was something I did to escape stress and unwind. I didn’t share the stories with anyone except for a couple of close friends. In fact, I was even afraid to admit to my husband that I wrote.

My Review

The first story by Beth Wiseman will make your heart ache, to have an imperfect child is so very hard. All that anticipation looking forward to the birth, and then the heartache of not knowing what to do, or how to cope, and it is the same feeling no matter which culture we live in?
That is what Ruth Anne and Levi must come to terms with, to be there for their child and each other. As we read along we hope they will find their way, and be there for each other.
Carolyn and Joshua are about to welcome a new addition to their new family. Joshua has now adopted Ben, but Carolyn is worried, and has deep fears that once the new little one comes, Joshua won’t feel the same about Ben. How can she give up her income and feel secure that her child will be taken care of? The power of prayer, she just needs to lean on her faith, but can she?
Kathleen Fuller’s novella, will bring tears to your eyes, so much tragedy in their past. Elle has over come most of the problems she has faced with her blindness, and now she a Chris are expecting their first baby. What surprises they are in for, and trying to keep her mother from taking over because of her handicap, you are going to love how Chris handles her.
The final novella is by Vannetta Chapman and at 42 Etta has a new baby, but is yearning for the return of her son David. Loved how God has placed the love of each child on these parents hearts, even if the rules of their religion is contrary to how they feel.
These stories will warm your heart, and as you can tell by the title, there is a new baby involved. You can read one in a sitting, but hard to stop at one. Enjoy!
