The Second Mrs. Hockaday by Susan Rivers

“All I had known for certain when I came around the hen house that first evening in July and saw my husband trudging into the yard after lifetimes spent away from us, a borrowed bag in his hand and the shadow of grief on his face, was that he had to be protected at all costs from knowing what had happened in his absence. I did not believe he could survive it.”

When Major Gryffth Hockaday is called to the front lines of the Civil War, his new bride is left to care for her husband’s three-hundred-acre farm and infant son. Placidia, a mere teenager herself living far from her family and completely unprepared to run a farm or raise a child, must endure the darkest days of the war on her own. By the time Major Hockaday returns two years later, Placidia is bound for jail, accused of having borne a child in his absence and murdering it. What really transpired in the two years he was away?

Inspired by a true incident, this saga conjures the era with uncanny immediacy. Amid the desperation of wartime, Placidia sees the social order of her Southern homeland unravel as her views on race and family are transformed. A love story, a story of racial divide, and a story of the South as it fell in the war, The Second Mrs. Hockaday reveals how that generation--and the next--began to see their world anew.

My Review

It took me a few pages to get into this book, but once I did it quickly became a read that I couldn’t put down. We are soon walking in Palacidia’s shoes, and what a life this young girl led, and where she found the energy and courage to go on is amazing.
The book takes place in the South and during the Civil War, and more amazing it is based on a true story. While the text is mostly in the form of letters, and a diary, along with using the illustrations in books for paper, as it was scarce. We see the hardships these people faced, and meet slavery head on, and see it brutality and wonder why the fighting was going on.
When you see her in jail, and at one point you wonder if she is going to hang, and it kept me reading as fast as I could to get the answers. Such a powerful story, and one shows the other side of this horrible war, and yet we see the strong side of preservation in hard times.
I found myself rooting for her in both the good and bad times, what a great read, and I highly recommend it.

Gone (Deadly Secrets, #2) by Elisabeth Naughton

Three years ago, Alec and Raegan McClane lived every parent’s worst nightmare: their one-year-old daughter, Emma, was abducted from a park when Alec turned his back for just a moment. Emma was never found, and presumed dead. The crushing trauma, plus Alec’s unbearable guilt, ended the couple’s marriage.
Now a four-year-old girl matching Emma’s profile is found wandering a local park. Alec and Raegan are heartbroken to discover she’s not their daughter but are newly motivated to find closure…and each secretly feels desperate to be in the other’s presence again.
Alec suspects his vengeful biological father is behind Emma’s disappearance. But as Raegan investigates other abductions in the area, she sees a pattern—and begins to wonder if Emma’s kidnapping is actually linked to something more sinister.
As Alec and Raegan race to uncover the truth, a long-burning spark rekindles into smoldering passion, and they realize they need each other now more than ever.

My Review

This book had me riveted to the pages, and kept me turning, feeling all the time the injustice. Then we find out that there are more, how could someone do what we happening, and how can it be stopped?
We find a couple very much in love, with the joy of a child in their mist, and then in the whisper of a second their lives are shattered. Their beloved child is gone, one thinks she is missing and the other she is dead, and thus the unit is shattered to the point of divorce.
What brings these two back together is the same thing that separated them to begin with. Now there seems to be even more danger, and their little one is still “Gone”.
The author had me on an emotional roller coaster from beginning to end, and let me tell you once you start reading; you have to get to the answers. This book will also linger with you, and make you think that maybe this is a true story.

Because You're Mine by Colleen Coble

Alanna has been plagued by tragedy. So it should come as no surprise that in the beauty that surrounds Charleston, all is not as it seems.

When her husband is killed by a car bomb while their band is on tour in Charleston, Alanna doesn’t know where to turn. Her father-in-law is threatening to take custody of the baby she carries, but the one thing she knows for sure is that she can’t lose the last piece of Liam she has left.

Their manager offers her a marriage of convenience to gain her U.S. citizenship and allow her to escape her father-in-law’s control. It seems like the perfect solution . . . but her doubts begin almost as soon as she arrives at Barry’s family home, a decaying mansion surrounded by swamp.

To make matters worse, Liam’s best friend survived the car bomb. She’s never really liked Jesse and now she can’t seem to get away from him. When he takes Liam’s place in their band, it’s almost more than she can bear.

But then things start happening. Things that could easily cost Alanna her life—or the life of her unborn child. Are they merely coincidences? Or is there something much more sinister at work?

My Review

This book had me page-turning as fast as I could read to get to the end and find the answers, even the title put my mind singing “Because You're Mine”, and you can conjure up what the story is about. Wrong.
Allana appears to have it all as the book opens, her Celtic band is heading to the top, she is married to the man of her dreams, and they are expecting their first baby. Of course, things can’t stay that way, but you never expect the turn of events that are about to happen.
While I figured out early on what was happening, there were still lots of surprises, and all that we picture is not always as they are, and with this book it is so very true.
The estate that Allana ended up at gave me the creeps, while I should have loved the historic old mansion, and when the pets or domestic animals, cats and dogs, end up missing, ugh!
With her father-in-law threatening to take her baby, and her manager offering her a life line, we have to hope that this is the answer, sounds good, but of course, things are not all what we think they are.
I loved her friends, and the mention of the Travelers, and the connection to them, our Irish Gypsies, and as it turns out Allana’s roots.
Once you start this one you are going to need answers.

A Love for Leah (The Amish Matchmaker #4) by Emma Miller

Widow Leah Yoder married for love once. A steady, serious older man would be ideal—someone completely unlike handsome, fun-loving Thomas Stutzman. She and the aspiring organic farmer agree to court to prove that this time, the matchmaker has made a mistake! But as their friendship deepens, will Leah settle for what she thought she needed, or put fear aside for a second chance at happiness?

My Review

We are back in Seven Poplars Amish community, and our Leah has returned home after loosing her husband and infant daughter. How hard it must have been for her to continue on, and we know that her faith is what leads her.
I had the feeling that she was beating herself up, and although she would embrace having more children and a husband, she doesn’t want to fall in love again. Why, because she doesn’t want the pain of loss, or because she feels she is dishonoring her late husband.
Thomas on the other hand has been living Amish, but at almost thirty has failed to make a commitment to the faith. He seems happy go lucky, and as the book opens he is being turned down from his offer of marriage, handsome Thomas, he has failed and his family think it is time to settle down and take a wife.
Thus we find these two at the Amish matchmaker, Sara, and this could be one of her first failures, and a very unlikely match. Watch as these two interact, and meet the rest of their families, I loved being reunited with Susanna and King David; these two make their family so special.
This is a fast read, mainly because you want to find out all the answers, and the only problem I had was turning the last page and still wanting more.
I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Love Inspired, and was not required to give a positive review.

My Review

First I want to say that I loved the historical aspects of this book, we are reminded of the beginnings of Communist Russia, and the end of the Tzar.
In this story we are made aware of the wealth and relationships of White Russian Tzar’s and their families. I had forgotten a lot of this and was happy that the author worked this information into this suspense of this book.
Poppy Denby is a woman who was breaking ground for others, and didn’t even realize it. What an exciting time the 1920’s must have been for her in England, and we are led down a lot of twist and turns, and kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, and who is going to survive. The word pictures in this book kept me page turning, and enjoying every minute, and can’t wait for more from this series.

Eden: The Animals Parable by Keith Korman

“Ask the animals, and they will teach you” —Job 12:7

Experience the Gospels in a way that you never imagined.

In this beautifully inspired retelling of the Gospels, we see Jesus and his disciples in the Holy Land through the eyes of the animals—especially his intrepid and loyal dog, Eden.
With a wise, old donkey, innocent lambs, and legions of curious field mice—the animals follow their master’s journey across Galilee and onto Jerusalem, rapt with awe and wonder and bearing great tidings—even if they don’t fully comprehend the divine events they witness.

Simple, clear, and spiritually profound, Eden is for readers of all ages, this artful retelling is captivating, moving, and alive with the joy you felt the first time you opened the Bible.

Author Sonia Panigrahy created "Nina the Neighborhood Ninja" out of a lifelong love of reading. Sonia was surprised that she could not find books for girls that realistically identified females as intelligent, tough, brave, and adventurous.

After unsuccessful attempts to find a young girl superhero protagonist on the pages of a book, especially one of color, she gave up. Then she created her own. Read more at www.soniapanigrahy.com.

My Review

Delightful and made us smile, and we quickly had to read the story to see the pictures, and find out how things came out. Then we read it again a lot slower to enjoy and talk about what happened.
The story is beautifully illustrated with bright colors, and full of messages for young girls. Nina and Fiona go out of their way to help others, even when the weather got difficult, they show creative ways of using what they have to help.
A soft sturdy paper back book that is fine for the hands of little ones, and for you as you read it to them, ours has been read a lot. A new favorite here.

Amish Weddings (Neighbors of Lancaster County #3) by Leslie Gould

Gould's Series Concludes in Love and Marriage
Gregarious Rose Lehman, who's always the life of the Amish youth singings, is determined to marry the bishop's son, Reuben Byler--until the handsome Army buddy of her future brother-in-law shows up in Lancaster County. In comparison to Trevor, Reuben seems downright boring. Trevor shares Rose's sense of fun and adventure, and her easygoing disposition.
When her sister Lila's buggy is rear-ended and Lila is horribly injured, Rose finds herself with more freedom than she's ever experienced. Everyone is so concerned about Lila that no one realizes Rose is sneaking out with Trevor. Except for Reuben. But in his usual passive way, he doesn't confront her, nor does he address the situation with her Dat or anyone else in the district. Rose appreciates Reuben's discretion, but she also resents it. Part of her relishes the freedom she's found with Trevor, but the other part of her wishes Reuben would "fight" for her, as much as any Amish man would. Too late, she realizes the foolish choice she's made. Has she ruined her best chance at love, or is there another path to happiness she just hasn't seen yet?

About The Author

Leslie Gould pro photo -3.1

Some of my strongest memories from childhood include stories—and how those stories connected me to my family and friends. As a preschooler, I remember playing Island of the Blue Dolphin with my three siblings and the neighbor kids, my father reading A Street of Flower Boxes to us before bed, and my mother reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn on long car trips. I also soaked up Bible stories and accounts of grace and redemption during Sunday school and Good News Club. Along with my love of stories, my love of writing began in those early years with my very first written word—S-K-Y.
Even though I knew I wanted to write fiction by the time I was in the sixth grade, as I grew older I pursued other things instead, such as majoring in history and communications, and then working as a museum curator, then a public relations specialist, and finally as a magazine editor. Once I finally started writing fiction, it was another ten years until I sold my first novel. By that time I’d been married for nearly 20 years and had four children of my own to read to.
In the decade and a half since my first contract I’ve written twenty-one novels, from Beyond the Blue, a story about international adoption set in Vietnam, to Courting Cate, a retelling of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” set in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. No matter what I write, I aim to reveal truths about God’s love, beauty, and redemptive work in our lives. My goal is to connect more deeply to God, family, and friends through my writing. My hope is that my stories encourage readers to deepen their own connections too.

My Review

This is the third and final book in this series, and from the first page to the last there is action of some kind going on in this family. We are brought up to date on the past two books, and I was happy to find out and get caught up on other family member’s lives. Now you might want to read the other two books, they are awesome and you may loose out, but this book can stand-alone.
Poor Reuben, he thought he was in love with Lila, and now she is with Zane, and now he thinks he is in a relationship with Rose, but Rose is being fickle, but he can also be blamed on indecision.
I loved the babies that are brought into this story, and of course, the family is growing, and we do find new ones. Then there is Beth and Tim, what can ever be with these two? You will be page turning to get to the end and find out all the answers. Now Trevor, I had him pegged, but maybe you will have a different perspective on him.
Zane seems to want to be Amish, and he does love Lila, but can he give up the English desire for justice? Yes this one will keep you up late waiting for answers. I for one would love more, but this is the end of the series.
I received this book through Net Galley, and the publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.
